Sica Narcotics Case
Witness Stabs Victim
Merced, Cal., Mar. 27 'U.RI
An ambush struck for the second
time in a month at another po
tential witness in the govern

torious Joe Sica.
But a knife-wielding assassin
who leaped on Edward Dollins,
one of 16 originally indicted in
the Sica case, failed to inflict a
mortal wound.
Dollins, a small-time Fresno
hoodlum, was rushed to county
hospital for treatment of three
stab wounds. Hospital attend
ants said he would recover.

Two-Tenths Of One Per
Cent In Last 30 Days
Washington. March 27 U.R
The cost of living fell two-tenths
of one per cent in the month end
ed February 15, the bureau of
labor statistics reported today.
The consumers' price index
for February 15, was 166.5 per
cent of the i935-39 average. The
February average was 1.5 per
cent lower than last year, but 25
per cent higher than in June,
1946 when price controls were
relaxed.
The drop in living costs was
due to a six-tenths of one per
cent fall in food prices and a
small skid in clothing prices.

WHAT HORMONE
A hormone is a chemical sub-1
stance produced by an organ of !
the body which, when transport-
ed to other or-
gans or tissues,
produces cer
tain effects
the formation
upon them. Tne
body functions
in response to
formation and
action of these
hormones.
When certain

mones decrease
in volume or

Ui. drady
the body, or
when, for some reason, they de
velop in excessive quantities,
bodily disease develops.
When the hormone produced
by the thyroid gland is excessive,
a condition known as "hyper
thyroidism" develops which is
characterized by emotional in
stability, rapid pulse, loss of
weight, profuse sweating and
other signs. When the thyroid
hormone is deficient in infancy,
cretinism arrested physical and
mental development, results. If
the hormone secretion becomes
deficient in the adult, lethargy
and other symptoms appear.
The organs or glands which
manufacture hormones are con
trolled by or subject to the influ
ence of hormones from otlvr
glands. The pituitary gland
which lies at the base of the
brain is regarded as the "master
gland" of the hormone system.
Some organs or glands produce
several different hormones, each
with a capacity for action pecu
liar to itself alone.
Certain hormones peculiar to
sex are known as the male and
female sex hormones. When a
female sex hormone is injected
into a male, masculinizing in
fluences, such as the appearance
of a beard, may result.
Dr. Charles Huggins, of Chi
cago, was first to discover some
surprising actions' of hormones
on cancer. He established that if
the hormones peculiar to the
male sex were removed or
greatly diminished, cancer of the
prostate gland in a given indi
vidual tended to disappear.
While this action seemed per
haps permanent in some cases, he
found that after a lapse of years
or at least many months, the
cancer again commenced to
"grow" and "spread."
Somewhat comparable results
were obtained by "neutralizing"
the male sex hormone by the in
jection of female sex hormone.
This research opened new vistas
in cancer and hormone research
and undoubtedly contributed to
the research incentive and effort
which produced "ACTH." the
miraculous hormone substance
which is 'the most exciting news
in medicine today.
Some peculiar and paradoxial
findings have resulted from fur
ther research. It has been estab
lished, for instance, that the male
sex hormone, if injected into a
female with cancer had an effect
in slowing its growth and spread.
If the female sex organs were
removed, a comparable action
resulted. It was thus established
that sex hormones stimulated the
development of cancer, already
txisting. when of the same sex
type, and that these hormones
depressed the development of
cancer when used in opposite sex
types.
However, this action seems to
depend on the age of the patient j
to a large extent. Elderly per
sons have shown improvement
under the use of sex hormones
which seem -to' simulate cancer
in younger persons. The reason
for this is unknown at the pres
ent time.
Some victims of cancer, learn
ing of the action of hormones,
have refused operation and have
insisted upon treatment with hor
mones alone. This Is very un-
imiarjOM.
