old bachelorette named Jacoba

The Canals Of Mars

Continuing from last Week
when we pointed out that the
bright, non-twinkling, reddish
object In the eastern sky in the
early evening is the planet Mars,
we give here the promised dis
cussion of the so-called Martian
canals. This is a subject on
which there is considerable dis
agreement among eminent astron
omers. Some believe these fine
markings are abundant and quite
distinct; others perhaps with
less acute eyesight have never
seen them and declare they are
simply "figments of the imagina
tion." The clear-eyed Italian astron
omer Schiaparelli in 1877 was
the first to announce the fine,
dark lines which at times seemed
to extend in various directions
from the planet's surface. Later,
the astronomers Douglass, Pick
ering, Holden, Campbell and
Schaeberle in America, and Per
rotin in Europe studied them ex
tensively. Some said at times
certain canals appeared double
like the tracks of a railway.
.Went Further
The one who really gave prom
inence to the canals was Percival
Lowell at his observatory near
Flagstaff, Ariz. His interpreta
tions went further than any
others. Favored with clear skies,
an elevation of 7,300 feet, a
splendid refracting telescope and
the most sensitive of eyes, Dr.
Lowell expressed his conclu
sions as follows:
As winter approaches in either
hemisphere, the white polar cap
is often small or entirely missing.
Then sometimes gradually and
picked up a piece of French
toast and powdered his nose.
Then he splashed all five pats
of butter in his water glass and
took a big swig.
Lewis Throws Fork
Gus retreated to the kitchen.
Lewis threw a fork ut him.
Everybody in, Lucey's swank
restaurant thought this was hil
arious. They jabbed each other
in the ribs laughing. Lewis stuck
his tongue out at em.
When Dean Martin, the sing
ing half, waltzed in, Lewis threw
a couple of forks at him, too.
Then he flipped him with but
ter. Martin laughed as loud as
anybody.
Punch Drunk Routine
Then Martin grabbed the lime
light and went into his punch
drunk fighter routine. That
takes about five minutes.
By this time Gus had snaked
back with a salad, threw it on
the table, and dashed for cover

Cows
Ever milk a cow? I tried once
but couldn't make the grade. Dr.
Robert Wheldon, British agricul
tural expert, says the way the
milker sits on the stool has much
t odo with urging the cow to give
the maximum amount of milk.
Doctor Wheldon probably knows
what he is talking about, be
cause he owns a cow named
Diana, which produces 12034
pounds of milk in twenty-four
hours.
Nerve Test
Am informed there Is a "nerve
test" which calls for lathering
and shaving a balloon. If it can
be done without causing the bal
loon to burst, it proves the
shaver has steady nerves. There
is something really interesting
for that Milwaukee checker

portions of the polar regions turn

sive. When spring arrives, the edges
of this white mantle are the first
to disappear, and their place is
taken by a sort of misty darken
ing or obscuration. It seems that
the snow is melting and its place
is taken by water, over which
hovers very moist air or fog.
Lines Lengthen
Next, very fine, short lines
appear running out from this
lake of liquid and in a general
direction toward the equator.
These lengthen at the rate of 51
miles per day and after several
weeks reach the equator. When
autumn comes, the lines disap
pear and a new set advances
from the opposite pole, where it
is then spring.
Water is scarce on Mars. In
telligent inhabitants, said Lowell,
have constructed canals to ditch
water from the melting polar
caps to other parts of the planet.
We do not see the actual ditches,
but rather the strips of vegeta
tion which spring up on both
sides of them. The large blue
green areas are broad expanses
of growing fields.
Considerable Work
Considerable work was done
on Mars in 1939 at the Lowell
observatory and in South Africa.
Dr. Edison Petlit of Mt. Wilson
observed extensively and became
a fervent believer in the reality
of the fine lines. Dr. H. N. Rus
sell of Princeton has recently
written:
"There is now no doubt re
garding the real existence of
these finer details, but the draw
ings and descriptions of them by
different observers are remark
ably discordant."
Excellent Idea But

Then Clancy hurried to the
doctor's office to pick up the
prescription.
He next headed for a local
drug store, where he got in line I
to have the order filled. While ;
he was standing there, one of ;
the clerks called out to the man ;
behind him. "Hello, inspector." !
Clancy dashed for the nearest ,
exit, but the inspector collared
him. His next stop was the city
jail. j
