AMATEUR DOCTOR
The amateur is the bane of the
real doctor's existence The ama
teur is found everywhere. He
gives his opin
ions sagely and
freely. He
never knows
what he is talk
ing about but
he revels in the
a 1 1 ention he
gets from oth
ers, perhaps
better Informed
than himself.
He derives an
almost sadistic
pleasure from
the fear he is
able to instill
in the minds of apprehensive
listeners. His blithe and ignorant
comments cause victims of di
sease to ignore their rapidly ad
vancing ill-health and to shun
competant medical care which
is always available. He shakes
the confidence of the patient in
his physician and adds to the
cost and burden of the patient's
misery.
Scarcely a day passes that
some miserable person does not
turn up at a doctor s ottice to
"give up," and to hear the offi
cial pronouncement of his im
pending doom at the devious
instigation of the amateur doc
tor. The amateur announces to
the victim that a certain sign is
a sure indication of tuberculosis
or cancer or diabetes or some
other ailment that he doesn't
know anything about. The ama
teur is a meddlesome, ignorant,
trouble-making nuisence and an
abomination to mankind. There
should be a law to suppress and
even jail him, if necessary, to
keep his looie mouth shut.
A woman may have twelve
children and not know a bloom
ing thing about obstetrics. A
man may have twelve assorted
fractures at the same time and
recover without knowing beans
about orthopedics. A nurse
may grace a doctor's office for
years on end without knowing
up from down about medicine. A
doctor spends ten or twelve years
in intensive training in an etiort
to understand the bare funda
mentals of disease; his opinions
are cautious and reserved, tie is
constantly perplexed and his
days are spent in profound con
templation of the problems that
beset him. He is ever-ready to
ask for consultation with other
doctors, and slow to commit him
self to a promise that he might
not possibly be able to make
good. He is so acutely aware ot
his limitations and his lack of
knowledge great in the aggre
gate as it might be that the
simplest question or condition
starts him off on a train of
thought which would be utterly
incomnre' insible to the amateur.
But the amateur! He knows
all instantly. There is no wait
ing and no delay. Questions, sim
ple or involved, are a dime a
dozen to him. He will be delight
3d to ply you with advice even
if you don't want it. He never
stands the slightest chance of
knowing what he Is talking
about, but that doesn't deter him.
He speaks with the voice of self
conferred authority derived
from the Dream Book, Dr. Glutz'
Economical Home Medical Ad
visor, the "health hour;" on the
Corn Brother's Natural Laxative
radio program, and from the fact
that he was born in a hospital
and knows all about doctors.
There Ls one very good and
simple rule that everyone can
follow. If the amateur starts to
sound off Just ignore him. If
you pay any attention to an ama
teur you prove that you are sil
lier than he Is. Waste no time
listening to the conclusions of a
person who Knows All because
his sister-in-law "had the same
thing." or because he knows
about a similar Instance In which
the doctors couldn't understand
It."
If you don't feel right, look up
a doctor. When the amateur
sounds off, Just yawn and walk
away.

Oatmeal Is Good Food
Is oatmeal a safe diet for one with
diabetes. Does It have less starch than

Answer As safe as any cereal can
be. Whether It contains less starch than
other cereals Is unimportant. Oats, oat
