Comment On
By HARMAN
Unittd Prau
Washington, .Mar. 22 (U.R)
It's spring, the almanac says.
That's the time to start look
ing tor the
birds, the bees,
the violets
and for the old
man to think
about coming
down with an
ache in the
back from dig
g i n g up the
garden.
I've always
followed the
advice of Sen.
Clinton P. An
derson, (D
N. M.) when
HarmaD Nichols
Clint was secretary of agricul
ture he once remarked that he
never plans a garden too big for
his wife to handle.
So that puts me into the re
search department; in the busi
ness of telling other people how
to make a garden. Being clum
sy, I had to call on the U. S. de
partment of agriculture for help.
The first rule of Secretary
Charles F. Brannan is don't
write to the department for seeds
or plant information.
"Hundreds of seed firms sell
seeds, plants, and garden sup
plies, he said. "These things,
plus fertilizers, fungicides, in
secticides, and tools also are sold
by thousands of retail, seed,
hardware, and general stores.
Look in the classified section of
your phone book."
Helper Published
The department has put out a
wife's little helper called "Grow
ing Vegetables in Town and
City."
It starts out in a sort of liter
ary vein by declaring that grow
ing stuff to eat is an "art, not a
science." You can read all the
books you want, the booklet
says, but the only way to grow
a good tomato, pea or onion is to
go right ahead and grow it.
The agriculture people, in
their advice to the novice, set
down a bunch of rules. They are
mostly on the "don't" side.
1. Don't try to grow vege
tables on a lot that is too poor to
make a good growth of weeds or
grass, or is made up of rubble
or unweathcred "subsoil fill."
or is contaminated with coal,
chemical, or oil-product wastes.
Or is so wet that it grows weeds
common to marshy or poorly
drained spots. Or is likely to be
flooded by stream overflow. Or
is located so that it received
much storm drainage or surface
water from above. Or is shaded

Don't Spade Wet Soil
2. Don't spade, plow or culti
vate soil that is too wet.
3. Don't use too much lime.
4. Don't run the rows up and
down a slope.
5. Don't plant seeds, root, or
tubers too deeply.
6. Don't plant seeds too thick
ly and don't fail to thin out
plants to the proper distance.
7. Don't let the fertilizer come
in contact with the seeds or
plants.
8. When you hoe, don't dig
deep enough to injure the shal
low roots of the vegetables.
9. Don't let the weeds get out
of hand.
10. If the rains don't come
don't sprinkle. Give the plants a
good dousing once a week.
11. Don't let the vegetables
become too old before harveting
them. And if you are worried
about cutworms don't.
The department of agriculture
has another little leaflet out on
that subject. The government
says it is "easy to get rid" of cut
worms. All you have to do Is
use a poisoncd-bran bait. Get a
peck of dry bran, add one-fourth
pound of white arsenic, paris
green or sodium fluosilicate, and
three or four quarts of water.
Mix the poison with the bran.
Caution add enough liquid to
make a crumbly mass. Then sow
the bait about the base of the
plant late in the evening.
Use about 10 to 15 pounds of
"wet bait" per acre. You can
look at junior's fractions book
and cut down the size of your
own plot.
Happy gardening!

Rogue River, Mar. 22 In ap

grade school basketball team was
given a banquet and dance Sat

the mothers of team members.
The team won at conference and
took second place in the tourna

school colors by Mrs. A. P. Klom
hause who also had charge of
table arrangements. Cheer lead

Lloyd Morrow introduced team
members, who responded with
after dinner speeches that were
a credit to their school. Later
games were played, followed by
dancing. Mrs. Ed Lilley was
chairman of the committee and
Mrs. Bob Hoover was in charge
of the dinner.
"The tax equalization board of
Rogue River would like it known
that no property valuations have
been changed as yet, regardless
of any rumors that may nave
been passed a r o u n d," states
Douglas Buckle, chairman of the
board. "The agreement with the
two appraisal engineers and As

after a recheck of the school dis

themselves, would revalue all
properties in the City of Rogue
River on a proportionate basis,
as shown by the survey now be

Mr. Logan says he is preparing

Communists Refuse
To Move Foreigners
Hong Kong. Mar. 22 tU.P.)
The Chinese communist govern
ment definitely has refused per
mission to move out 2,000 for
eigners from Shanghai, including
.luu Americans, the American
President lines announced today.
A spokesman for the shipping
company said the liner General
Gordon, which had been sched
uled to take aboard the evacuees
off the Yangtze river, had can
celled all planes for a visit to
Shanghai. Instead the ship will
sail tonight for Yokohama, Ja
pan.
The foreigners were to have
been transported from Shanghai
to the General Gordon's position
offshore by two landing craft,
which would make the run
through a min field in the Yang
tze river into Shanghai and back.
