The progressive party of Oregon
announced Monday it will spon
sor an initiative measure for
next November's general elec
tion which would establish a
more, liberal state-supported old
age pension program.
More than 150 party members
and advocates of increased pen
sions met here Sunday to plan
the initiative campaign. They
elected a committee of 12 to
launch the measure by April 10.
Nels Peterson, slate chairman
of the progressives, said the
measure needs 25.482 valid sig
natures filed in the secretary of
state's office by July 6 to make

Hiring Halls Ended

Federal Mediation Director Cy
rus China told a senate commit
tee today that abolishing union
hiring halls probably would set
off maritime strikes on all coasts.
Chlng's warning was contained
in a letter to the senate labor subcommittee,-
which is studying the
maritime hiring hall. The su
preme court has ruled in effect
that hiring halls were outlawed
by the Taft-Hartley act.

It may well be, and indeed I
hope so, that, situated as I am,
here in the midst of the most
frighten
ing concentra
tion of brass
specialists and
clinic racket
eers in the
K country, I get
' f i an unfavorable
impression of
the state of
the profession.
Some of my
medical
friends, that is,
real doctors (I
like to pretend

real doctors still think kindly of
me), tell me things are not so
bad as I think, particularly in
the smaller cities and villages
throughout the United States
and Canada. When I reply that I
certainly hope so, they assure
mc that medicine is still a noble
profession and they advise me to
travel and get a clearer view of
the way real doctors behave.
By this my colleagues mean
that I should get about the coun
try and see for myself what the
real doctors are doing. That is
good advice, I suppose. But I'm
taking it in a roundabout way I
want to have a good look at the
real doctors of South America,
South Africa and Europe first. If
I find them with their standards
down, whether in consequence
of the war or from the same ugly
cause as that which imperils the
integrity of American medicine.

Approach To Earth
In Ten Years .

New York, Mar. 22 (U.R) The
planet Mars is making its closest
approach to earth in 10 years,
but scientists insist that it's no
basis for the new report of fly
ing saucers.
Mars has been making these
neighborly visits every so often,
and on the current approach the
copper-colored planet will be as
near as about 44.000,000 miles
just a stone's throw in astron
omical distances.
Opposite Sun
The astronomers pointed out
today that on Thursday, March
23, the planet will be directly
opposite the sun with earth in
the middle. From that dale on.
the distance between Mars and
earth will decrease until about
March 28 when the planet of the
"Martians" begins its usual re
trent into Its eccentric orbit.
When the sun-earth-Mars line
up in a row, it is called an op
posite and the last occurred in
is. At mat time, nowever,
Mars did not approach as close
as it will in this opposite. The
planet will even be closer in
19S4 when only 35.000.000 miles
will separate earth and Mars.
That is the year when astron
omers hope to make some real,
scientific observations of Mars.
Oxvaen Lack Seen
Astronomers seem sure thai
Mars has an atmosphere, but
very little oxygen not enough
to suDoort life as is known on
earth. However, "yellow" and
"blue" clouds have been ob
served on the Dlanet. They are so-
called because they are picked
up by observation through yel
low or blue lielit.
One expert said today that
wilh Mars approaching earth to
within 44,000.000 miles and
about 1211,000,000 of the sun that
the planet's surface temperature
might rise as much as 10 degrees.
Karth people can now sec Mars
with no trouble. It rises Just as
the sun sets, and is brighter than
any star in the eastern sky. It
also is recognizable by tne red
dish glow it radiates. The scien
tists advise observers not to
strain their eyes looking for
"flying saucers'' zooming off the
surface of the planet.

on the bottom and a blinking
light on lop flew over Arkansas
last night at a "tremendous rate
of speed." two airline pilots re

derson saw the obiect over Stutt
gart, Ark., at 10:20 p.m. (EST).
"It was flying almost due
north and we crossed its path at
about a 45-degrcc angle," Adams
said. "It was about 1.000 feet
above us and was traveling at a
tremendous rate of speed.

"It had a peculiarly colored
and very interne light on the top
which blinked very rapidly. I
could tell it. was circular be
cause nf lighted windows on the
underside of it. They were ar
ranged in a perfect circular
pattern.
" . . . . We kept the object In
sight for about 45 seconds, until
il difappearcd from sight, pre
sumably because of its speed. I
would estimate lhat it was trav
eling between 500 and 600 miles
per hour."
Adams said none of the pas
sengers saw the disc and "wc

MEDICAL COLLEAGUES
I'll lower my sights accordingly
when I get back and begin
knocking about I mean traips
ing about America. If any reader
takes this as a hint that i want
lecture engagements, he or she
is sadly mistaken. My prayer is
that heaven will forgive me for
lectures I have perpetrated in
the past.
While jny medical friends ad
vise me to travel more, many of
the brass specialists (my term for
a medical merchant who holds
himself as a "specialist" but
takes all the business he or she
can lure away from the general
practitioners of the community)
and the clinic racketeers (my
term for the dinky little doctors
who haven't the courage to prac
tice under their own name but
instead set up in business under
the name of the Squedunk Clinic
which impresses the Yankee
Wiseacres express it in similar
terms. They mention precisely
where I should go. Who knows?
Maybe that's where I shall end
up.
One thing I wish to say, how
ever, is that for all of my un
pleasant ways and my egregious
teachings, I have never betrayed
the confidence of a correspond
ent. I may dissent from the view
or idea presented by a doctor, if
the correspondent happens to be
a doctor. I may reject the idea,
or even ridicule it. But I keep
the identity of the doctor as con
fidential as the doctor would
would keep a secret revealed to
him or her in the consulting
room or at the bedside. Hence
I feel I need not reassure phy
sicians or any other correspond
ents who may have something to
say to me. favorable or unfavor
able, that I am not insensible
to the ordinary amenities.
My medical friends, if I may
again use the plural, never hesi
tate to tell me off in vigorous
language when they think I am
wrong. Sometimes I go red in
the face and admit lhat I pulled
a boner. Sometimes I tell them
to go fly a kite. But in every in
stance it is strictly between our
selves. Physicians of all ranks or de
grees who notice what they be
lieve to be wrong In this column,
owe it to the public welfare to
tell me so even if it is only a
brief message by postcard. By
registering his or her dissent or
protest in tins way tne pnysician
may not change my mind right
away, but, believe me, I have
the utmost respect for sincerity
of opinion, whether it conforms
with my own or not.
