50th Anniversary
Ernest Langleys
Observed At Party
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Langlcy,
who have lived In Jackson coun
ty for more than 50 years, were
honored at an open house March
12 in celebration of their golden
wedding anniversary. The open
house was held at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. V. T. Wilson on
Janney lane.
Flowers and tapers, which dec
orated the Wilson home and the
refreshment table, were of yel
low, and a three-tiered cake cen
tered the table. A pot of gold at
the foot of a rainbow contained
coins wrapped in gold colored
paper and the couple also re
ceived many other gifts and mes
sages. About 100 friends called dur
ing the afternoon. Many were
childhood friends of Mrs. Lang
ley and three chums of her child
hood davs were present. They
were Mrs. Nettie Lewis Thomp
son of Medford, Mrs. Lucy Lam
bert Knox and Bertha Lewis
Keegan of Jacksonville. It was
Mrs. Thompson, then Nettie Lew
is, who introduced the Langleys
at their first meeting.
- Mrs. Wilson was assisted by
Mrs. . Fred Fick, who poured,
and Mrs. C. L. Howard, who
served the wedding cake. Mrs.
Anna Cater had charge of the
guest book. Mrs. Alliean Max
well and Mrs. A. W. Bowman
assisted with the serving.
The bell which topped the
cake was first used on the cake
served at the 68th wedding an
niversary celebration of Mr. and
Mrs. Elbert Kayser of Medford.
Mrs. Langley, the former
Maryann Bienvenu, and her hus
band were married in Jackson
ville March 15, 1900, at the home
of the bride's parents. Mr. Lang
ley had come to this county
from Minnesota, while his bride,
a native of California, came to
Jackson county with her parents
at the age of three years.
Mr. Langley was a fireman
for the Southern Pacific railway,
serving on the run between Ash
land and Portland, and also
served as deputy assessor for
Jackson county for many years.
He was a member of the pioneer
volunteer fire department of
Medford, joining the department
in 1890.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Langley
have been active In the county,
working with lodges and other
civic and fraternal groups.
Two Formal Balls
Planned By Temple
To Honor Potentate
The annual formal reception
and ball given by Hlllah temple
of the Shrine each year for the
illustrious potentate, will be di
vided this year, because of the
Increased membership of the
temple, and two events are
scheduled.
The two parties, which will
honor Potentate Herman H. May
berry and Mrs. Mayberry, as well
as members of the divan, are set
for Saturday, March 25 in the
Ashland Elks temple, and Sat
urday, April 15, in the Dutch
Mill, Roscburg. .
For the Ashland reception and
ball the hospitality hour is set
lor 8 p.m. and the reception lor
9 p.m.
College Students
Hold Art Exhibit
Ashland Southern Oregon
college art students are holding
an exhibit of their work in room
108. Churchill hall from March
17 to March 22. Included in the
exhibit arc ceramics, water
paintings, pastels, soap carvings,
wire work, silk screen, fabric de
signs and other art objects.
These materials have been pro
duced this quarter by art stu
dents under the direction of Miss
Marion Ady and Irwin Whit
aker. The exhibit will be open to the
public from 3 tn 5 p.m. and 7 to
9 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday,
March 20-21. The public is cor
dially invited to visit this ex

club of the Disabled American

apparel of the guests.

Traveler Entertained
In Medford This Week;
Importer Of Textiles
An Interesting visitor in the
city last week was Mrs. Eliza
beth Flint. Lima, Peru, who was
a guest of Mrs. Margaret Fab
rick. The two women met a few
years ago when Mrs. Fabrick was
traveling in Guatemala.
Originally, Mrs. Flint lived
in Missoula, Mont., her husband
having been with the forest serv
ice there, and Inter she lived in
Central America, doing both
teaching and governmental
work. Later Mrs. Flint went to
Lima. Peru, where she taught
and wrote.
Mrs. Flint interests herself in
archaeology and is also at the
present engaged In importing
handmade textiles Into this coun
try. The visitor arrived Monday
and left Wednesday on her way
to Portland, Seattle and Mon
tana. Tuesday night Mrs. Fab
rick Invited a few friends to her
home to meet Mrs. Flint.
The traveler plans to return
to Lima soon and later will make
a trip to Europe in the interest
of her export business.

at the group's annual election of
officers Tuesday. Mrs. O. D.
Martin was elected first lieuten
ant and Mrs. Mack Lemmon.

The wedding of Earlene Bow
man Short to Raymond Winter
Fernlund took place March 12,
with William Attridge of the
Latter Day Saint's church per
forming the ceremony at his
home, 116 Washington street, at
four o'clock in the afternoon.
For the ceremony the bride
wore a grey suit with white ac
cessories and her bridal bouquet
was of roses and sweet peas. She
was attended by Mrs. V. K.
Swindall who wore a grey dress
with matching accessories and a
corsage of sweet peas and gar
denias.! V. K. Swindall was best man
for the bridegroom. The Swin
dalls came from Eugene. Ore.,
to act as attendants for the cou
ple. Eleven guests witnessed the
wedding, including Mrs. John
Morgan, Eugene.
The bride, a graduate of the
Eugene high school, has been on
the staff of Sacred Heart hospi
tal as a nurse since May of 1947.
Mr. Fernlund is a son of Mrs.
Augusta Fernlund of 479 Berry
dale avenue, Medford.
The newlyweds are living at

white carnations. Miss Barbara

couple said the marriage vows.

engagement of Joanne Therese
Wheeler to Duane Mead Corwin.
Miss Wheeler is a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wheeler, for

Days Creek. Mr. Corwin is a son
of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Corwin,
now living in Milo, but also for
merly from the Applegate.
A late summer wedding has
been planned.
Miss Wheeler Is employed in

rium, Sanitorium, Cal. Mr. Cor
win is a theology student at Pa
cific Union college at Angwin,

Annua! Meeting Of
Girl Scout Council
Set For Wednesday
Election of a board of direc
tors and reports are slated for
the annual area council meeting
of the Rogue Valley area of
Girl Scouts to be held in Ash
land Wednesday, March 22 at
the Elks temple. The sessions
will open at 10 a.m. Area offi
cers ask all volunteer scout
workers to attend.
A guest speaker will be Miss
Jackie Wilkes, freshman at the
University of Oregon who at
tended the International Girl
scout camp in Switzerland last
summer.
In addition to the annual elec
tion of the area board, an im
portant part of the meeting will
be round table discussions cov
ering training, program and out-
of-door activities, it is an
nounced. These topics will be
discussed in three different
round table groups, including
Brownie round table, planned
and conducted by the Grants
Pass district and intermediate
and junior-senior high school
round tables, both to be conduct
ed by Medford district leaders.
Workers in the Medford dis
trict can help by suggesting ex
change ideas for the round ta
bles, it Is said, and the sugges
tion is made that a table of rec
ord books, badge notebooks, sew
ing projects, transportation and
communication displays and oth
er items will be helpful to all
leaders.

ford district who will attend are
Mrs. M. N. Hogan, area presi
dent who will preside; Mrs. Eu
gene Peterson, 1950 Medford dis
trict chairman, Mrs. Allan Perry,
Medford district chairman for
1949 who will give the Medford

the area who will report on
camp activities for 1949; Mrs.

has been signed as a member of
the San Francisco Optra com
pany. Mils Farley, who was
graduated from Medford high
school and College of the Paci
fic In Stockton, Cal., has been
living in San Francisco for the
past several months.

Opera Firm Signs
Miss Jean Farley,
Medford Soprano
Miss Jean Farley, daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Farley of
Medford, has signed a contract
to sing with the San Francisco
Opera company. Miss Farley, a
soprano, is at present living in
San Francisco and studying with
two teachers there.
Miss Farley auditioned for the
opera company director week be
fore last, and early last week
was given a contract. It is ex
pected that rehearsals for the
coming season will begin soon.
The singer was graduated from
Medford senior high school, and
during her high school days stud
ied with Mrs. Roberta Ward
Bebb here. She then attended
College of the Pacific, Stockton,
Cal., studying under Henry Wel-
ton. head of the voice department
of the college.
Following her graduation from
College of the Pacific, she stud
ied one summer at the Music
Academy of the West at Santa
Barbara, where only advanced
pupils are enrolled, and later
went to San Francisco. She is
currently studying voice under
Vera Osborne and also with the
opera coach, Usiglie.
Miss Farley, in addition to be
ing on the staff of Sherman Clay
and company in San Francisco,
has been filling singing engage
ments and will sing for the At
water Kent auditions soon. She
entered the auditions once be
fore, receiving honorable men
tion. Miss Farley has also been
auditioned for television, and ex
pects to fill engagements in the
San Francisco studios.
The singer is making plans for
a year's study in Italy at some
future time.

will sail aboard the Queen Mary
on April 7th for Cherbourg,
France. After spending several
days in Paris they will go to
Stuttgart, Germany, arriving
there in time to celebrate the
80th birthday of Mrs. Schempp's
father. After some time in south
ern Germany, the couple plans to
motor on to Bavaria to 8ttend
the Passion Play, after which
they will spend several weeks in
Switzerland. They will sail July
1 from Cherbourg, France for the
return trip.
