Dusette Cops Battle
Royal Over Lipscomb

French-Canadian Hercules, won
the battle royal championship in
the armory wrestling ring last
night by taking the lone fall
from Jack Lipscomb. They were
survivors of a free-for-all.
Lipscomb's roughtouse tactics
gave Dusette plenty of trouble
until the Eugene tavern keeper
turned to Referee LecyGrable to
protest the arbiter's actions.
When Lipscomb did that, Du
sette clamped on a full nelson
and the evening's hostilities
came to an abrupt end.
Gui Has Hit Fun
Gorgeous Gus, the wrestling
bear, had a barrel of fund in the
battle royal, tossing everyone in
sight to the mat repeatedly. Even
when they ganged up on htm
Ol' Gus held the upper hand un
til the four matmen massed in
front of the bruin, pulled his
hind lppc fi-nm ima. V.;m 1
all four then piled on top to
eliminate the animal.
The bear hotly protested the
decision by taking after Referee
Grable and tossing him all over
the ring until Trainer Billy Fox
was able to get him under con
trol. After much double crossing on
the part of Tony Ross, Jack
Lipscomb and Jack O'Reilly, the
Australian was pinned bv Ross
and then Lipscomb and Dusette
got rid of Ross.
First Match Draw
In the first regulation match
following the battle roval.
O Reilly and Ross went 30 min
utes to a no-fall draw. Although
neither ..one really got dirty,
they were rougher than a couple
of cobs. When the thing ended,
Ross wanted more but the com
bined efforts of Grable and

At Club Here
On Week-end
There will be golf activity at
Rogue Valley Country club this
week-end for. both youngsters
and adults.
Saturday and Sunday are
scheduled as final days for men
to qualify for their annual spring
handicap and the first class for
juniors is set for 9:30 a. m. Saturday.-
The class will be prin
cipally for beginners.
Clyde Leonard this week tal
lied a net 69 to move into sec
and place among 37 handicap
qualifiers. He trails I. E. Mays,
who clubbed a 68.
Ladies' Golf Games
In ladies' day play at the coun
try club yesterday 15 women
participated in a kicker's tour
ney. Mrs. James Wyatt topped
group A with a net 41 and Mrs.
Vic Sether headed group B with
a net 48.
Five Medford high school
golfers left for Eugene this
morning to vie in a pre-scason
test with teams from several
other schools. The youths were
Phil Getchell, Eddie Oldfield,
Bill McAllister, Justin Smith
and Bob Shepherd. They were
accompanied by fathers of two
of the boys, Bayard Getchell and
Robert Shepherd.
CP Businessmen
To Honor Youths
Central Point, Mar. 17 Busi
nessmen will honor two Central
Point grade school basketball
teams Wednesday, March 22,
with a victory banquet at the
junior high school. Al Simpson,
grid coach at Southern Oregon
college will be speaker.
The quintets won both the A
and the B divisions of the county
grade school basketball tourney
last week-end.
On the businessmen s commit
tee are Chairman Don Faber,
Paul Hopkins, M. C. Gleason.
Ardcn Pinkham. Ken Powell and
Lloyd Brock. The dinner is set
for 6:30 p.m. Persons who wish
tickets may contact committee
members or C. A. Meyer, ele
mentary principal. Meyer will be
toastmaster.
O'Reilly took the notion out of
him.
Grable and Fox tangled in the
curtain raiser under a gentle
man's agreement that neither
would worn on the other s in
jured knee. Grable grabbed the
fall with an abdominal stretch.

Leave for Cage Meet;

to leave today for Eugene to at
tend the state class A high
school basketball tournament
and possibly to seek opponents
for various sports in 1952.
Coach Frank Roelandt of the
Black Tornado basketball squad
left Tuesday for the Eugene
tourney.
Replacements Needed
Newland said yesterday that
while several of the tracKmcn
at the high school looked pretty
good for the first time trials held
Tuesday and Wednesday, his
biggest problem by far is find
ing capable replacements for

Going South
John "Tex" Chandler, who
was signed this season as a coach
for the Medford Rogues (Nug
gets., left this morning by car
for Yuba City, Cal., to work out
with a semi-pro baseball club
there and get into condition for
the coming Far West class D
league season.
Accompanying him were
Marvin Cartwright, who played
third base for the Medford Cra
ters of the semi-pro Southern
Oregon league last season, and
Floyd Shotwell. a pitcher signed
by the Rogues for this 1950 sea
son.
Shotwell and Cartwright also
will work into condition so they
may be in good shape for the
opening of the Rogues training
period at Santa Maria, Cal.,
early next month.
Chandler was playing-mana-ger
for the Craters last year
after helping the Nuggets in
spring training. While down
south the former major and mi
nor league catcher will also look
over possible players for the
Rogues to take to training.

He said between the three In
individual races or field events
and in relay events they could
usually be counted on to contri
bute 20 points to Medford.
At least one big factor in the
Tornado's favor as far as track
is concerned is that there are
two or three times as many
youths out for some events this
year as there were in 1949. New
land said that if quantity counts
for anything Medford should do
all right.
Football Opponents
Ragsdale indicated he was not
looking for any opponents in
1950 but might seek a football
foe for 1951. Medford's two-
year contract with Tillamook on
a home-and-home basis ends this
fall and the head coach here
would like to get a Willamette
valley school.
He indicated either Spring
field, Albany, a Portland school
or Salem would be more than
welcome. Ragsdale said he
would prefer a school like
Eugene or Springfield as dis
tances would not be so great that
large numbers of fans would not
travel back and forth.
Medford's first track meet
will be a "short distance'' affair
with Grants Pass here March 25.
Klamath Falls will be the Tor
nado opponent in the first thin-
clad meet that will count much
when the Pels come here April 1.
High School Game
Today Cancelled
Medford high s scheduled
doubleheader with Yreka. Cal.,
at the local field this afternoon
was postponed due to rain and
wet grounds, Coach Alex Mc
Donald of the Tornado said this
morning. He said even if the sun
had stayed out playing would
have been doubtful.
Some work has been done in
getting the local school diamond
in readiness and the ground
would have been soft in spots
even with a sunny day, the coach
reported.

local field Friday, March 31.
Practice games with smaller
schools near Medford are

In Augusta Tournament

Babe Didrickson Zaharias, the
angular and fabled female who
has entered and won more
than 700 athletic events, took a
long, first strike today on golf's
$17,000 trail.
The Babe whizzed in at dusk
yesterday with a men's par 72,
topping Claire Doran, the Cleve
land school teacher by three
strikes. It was the babe's first
serious tournament effort since
she won the ail-American open
at Chicago last summer, for she
has played exhibitions and ful
filled public appearance dates in
Florida all winter.

Pass, who won the southern
Oregon welterweight champion
ship here last week, will meet
Eddie Conrad, Fort Jones Indian,
in the main event of the South
ern Oregon Boxing club's ama
teur ring card at the armory
on March 22.
It will be a non-title fight in
asmuch as Conrad, undefeated
in three starts here, is not a resi
dent of southern Oregon.
Joe Carothers. brother of the
welter king, will tangle with
Donovan Wolfe, pride of Phoe
nix, In the semi-windup. Caroth
ers won a lot of fans locally
when he dropped a decision to
Dale Odom here over a month
ago while Wolfe decisioned

Killer Dick Adkins, destined

honors with Samson winning the
shootoff. In the handicap shoot
the same day Ted Jantzer won
top place in a shootoff of a tie
with Dick Hervey.
NAIB Semi-Final

was installed in the favorite's
role In the NAIB basketball
tournament today as the four
survivors met in the semi-final
round.
East Central was slated to
clash with Central college of
Fayette, Mo., tonight in the sec
ond game after the University
of Tampa meets Indiana State in
the opener.
The Oklahomans really opened
the eyes of the fans last night as
they treated highly-rated Brook
lyn college almost with con
tempt during an 84-52 victory in
the quarter-final round.
Central Missouri gained the
"bracket of four" by scoring a
65 to 55 victory over Central
Washington college. Central Mis
souri rolled to a 17-5 lead dur
ing the first 10 minutes of play
and never was headed.
Recreation
Local Gyms
Recreation will continue to be
available for boys each Saturday
from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3
p.m. in the six local school gym
nasiums as long as the boys
show enough interest and the
weather warrants it.
When good weather prevails
either in the morning or in the
afternoon or both, games will be
played out of doors. Only dur
ing stormy weather will be gyms
be used, the local school depart
ment explained, today.
Adequate supervision by teach
ers will be provided outdoors and
indoors.

Tourney Dropped
The sixth grade basketball
tournament scheduled March 24
and 25 at Howard school has
been cancelled, Principal Harold
Bohnert of Howard said today,
He said several parents had
thought the tourney was coming
too late in the season and he felt
that this being true there would
be little support given the tour
nament. This Howard school
tourney would have been the
third grade school playoff of the
current season also.
