G. T. McCoy, California state
highway engineer, asked for an
increase in forest highway ap
propriations. McCoy said tho
$20,000,000 annual appropria
tion provided for in the current
federal highway aid bill "is only
about half the amount actually
required." He suggested that tho
amount be Increased "to at least
$28,000,000."
McCoy also said that the $12.
500,000 authoriied for construc
tion of forest roads and trails
should be boosted to $17,500,000.
As for the overall fedoral high
way aid program he . said that

cial insulation and funnel-shaped
terminals which could carry 100
transmissions simultaneously, as
compared to today's coaxial ca
ble which can carry one,
Immediate Use Seen
One immediate use of Dr. Gou
bau's "G-String" may be as an
inexpensive means of distrib
uting television programs to city
homes on a "wired wireless" ba
sis, at present prohibitively high
in cost. It also may be possible
to pipe television programs at
relatively low cost to areas of the
United States now out of televi
sion range, for Instance, the mid
western farm belts.
Engineers also pointed out
that though this discovery will
be of civilian use, It will be
even more important to the
armed forces. The signal corps
said the new transmission line
is likely to change many radar
techniques and simplify the dif
ficult problem of feeding power
to rotating antennae. It will al
so permit communication never
before available.
Dr. Goubau's paper was the
culmination of scientific studies
at the signal corps engineering
laboratories that began with
months of mathematical predic
tions. Experimental models were
subsequently ouut, proving tnai
the lines' efficiency was 10
times that of comparable types
presently in use. .
