Hawaii Teamster Drive
Honolulu, T. H., Mar. 16 (U.R)
Dave Beck, vice-president of the
AFL Teamsters' union, left for
the U. S. mainland today after
announcing he would recom
mend a teamster drive for a na
tional AFL maritime union "be
fore we get into trouble with
Russia."
Beck said he was concerned
with "subversive influences" in
present waterfront and mari
time unions.
"We simply must drive the
Red rats off the waterfronts and
high seas."
Beck's announcement presaged
a battle with Harry Bridges,
president of the CIO Interna
t i o n a 1 Longshoremen's and
Warehousemen's union, which
controls most of the waterfront
work on the Pacific Coast and
in the Hawaiian islands. Bridges
currently is on trial in San Fran
cisco on charges he lied by de
nying at his naturalization hear
ing that he was a communist.

Atomic Hospitals
Planned To Help
Cancer Sufferers

American medicine appears to
be entering a new field in which
some patients will be treated
at "atomic hospitals." ,
These are located near atomic
furnaces such as Oak Ridge,
Tenn., or near huge cyclotrons
which also produce radioactive
substances used in the treatment
of cancer or in diagnostic work.
To Open Hospital
The atomic energy commission
announced yesterday that an
"atomic hospital" for cancer pa
tients will be opened soon at
Oak Ridge. A somewhat similar
hospital has been in operation
for about a year at the Brook-
haven national laboratory on
Long Island. In that time, more
than 30 patients have been
treated. About a third of them
suffered from cancer.
A third hospital is under con
struction at the Argonne labora
tories in Chicago, and some pa
tients already have been treated
there.
In treating some persons who
have cancer it is necessary to
take them to the atomic piles.

tal. This may become increas
ingly more important as medical
science discovers new radioac
tice materials or isotopes that
will have medical value. Many
of these isotopes lose their ra
dioactivity, and thus their effec
tiveness, rapidly.
Must Be Near Pile
Scientists believe that more
isotopes will be found to have
value in treating disease and to
trace disease. Some -may have
very short lifetimes, and thus
the patient must be near the
atomic pile so that the atomic
medicine he receives can be
"hot" and effective.
The Oak Ridge, Tenn.i hospi
tal, according to the AEC, will
work only through university
hospitals. At Brookhaven, pa
tients are taken from all hos
pitals and some have come from
as far away at 1000 miles.

Thirty-five members and guests
of the Rogue River Jersey Cattle
club gathered at the Frank
Schutywhol home March 12 to
enjoy a potluck dinner and the
regular monthly meeting.
Plans were made to hold a
two-day tour of Jersey herds of
Josephine and Jackson counties
on May 16 and 17 in lieu of the
spring Jersey Cattle show ori
ginally slated.

tentatively set for the third week
in June. Members receiving blue
ribbons on cattle at the county
fairs or having show animals
were urged to show at the state
fair as a county herd or indiv
