"We keep it very, very dig
nified," explained Mrs. Ruth
Kettle, a charter member of the
gang. "None of this cheap whoop
ing for us. We just meet at the
different homes and listen to
Jack's programs or his records.

"A lot of us live in Santa

Mrs. Kettle, who has two
grown children and will be a
grandma any minute now, is
brown-eyed and white-haired
and cute. But she gets coy when
you ask her age.
"Just say I'm eligible for the
club," she giggled.
The grandmothers have two
rules: all members have to be
over 40 and they have to think
this gent Smith is just about
the most wonderful singer ever
to vibrate a vocal chord.

A Snotrdrijt Quick-mtlbod Recipt
In 1 large mixing bowl combine:
3 sqwarM umwMtwtd dtocolat,
cut vtry fin
Vi cup boiling watar
When melted and cool, add these sifted
together:
1 k cups lifted caka flour
lWcupi sugar
teaspoon soil
Vi teaspoon doublt-action baking
powdr(l teaspoon ting la-action)
V lampoon soda
Add: to cup Snowdrift
to cup buttermilk
Mix enough to dampen flour. Beat 2
minutes. If by hand, count beating time
only. With electric mixer use "low
speed"; scrape bowl often; scrape beat
ers after 2 minutes.
Add: 2 tggs
1 ttaspoon vanilla
Beat 1 minute. Turn Into 2 greased 8
Inch layer pans, lined with plain paper.
Bake in moderate oven (350 F.) about
30 minutes. Frost with-

Supreme Court
Asked To Outlaw
Movie Censorship

The motion picture industry to
day asked the supreme court to
outlaw censorship of movies by
cities and states.
The industry made its request
in a test case dealing with the
picture "Curly," which has been
banned in Memphis, Tenn. The
movie was made by the Hal
Roach studios and was distrib
uted by United Artists Corp.,
Hollywood. Both companies are
appealing a decision ol the Ten
nessee supreme court, which up
held the Memphis ban.
Eric Johnson, president of the
Motion Picture Association of
America, said in a statement
that he hopes the U. S. supreme
court will hand down a clear
cut decision.
"You can't have freedom of
expression if any one medium of
expression is censored," he said,
"You can't dilute the constitu
tional right of free expression
without eventually destroying
it."
Johnson recalled that In a
movie anti-trust decision two
years ago, the high court placed
motion pictures in the same class
with the press, whose freedom
is guaranteed by the constitu
tion. Equality Unrecognized
The picture Curly" shows
white and negro children play
ing together and occupying the
same school room. In a letter in
forming United Artists of the ac
tion taken by the Memphis board
of censors, chairman Lloyd T.
Binford said:
'I am sorry to have to inform
you that the board is unable to
approve your 'Curly' picture
with the little negroes as the
south does not permit negroes
in white schools nor recognize
the social equality between the
races even in children."

Noted In February
The first three days of Febru
ary were considerably colder
than normal, with minimum tem
peratures below anything pre
viously recorded in February.
Otherwise, the month was mild
and short on precipitation, lead
ing to slow melting of the heavy
snow pack at elevations above
the valley floor. This summary
of February weather was re
leased today by the Mcdford
weather bureau in its monthly
meteorological review.

Oregon Farm Prices
Lead National Index
While the farm price index
for the nation advanced one per
cent during the month ending
February 15, the Oregon index
forged ahead as much as two
and a half per cent, according to
the Oregon State college exten
sion service. At mid-February,
however, the Oregon average
was still six per cent below a
year earlier.
Only one major decline was
noted in Oregon farm prices from
mid-January to mid-February.
That was in the price received
by farmers for potatoes. Other
principal commodities cither re
mained the same or strengthened
during the month.
All meat animals advanced.
Chickens were also higher but
eggs held unchanged. Butterfat
and wool prices were the same
as a month earlier. Apples in
creased, and in the grain and
hay division, baled hay showed
a substantial gain, but grains
were unchanged to only slightly
higher than a month earlier.
