Comment On
By HARMAN
Washington. Mar. 14 (U.R)
The man and his pretty wife,
Betty, were standing there in
the rain wait
ing for a cab
in front of the
Cort theatre in
New York.
One finally
came along
and tney jump
cd in and said:
"P e n n s t a
tion." On the way
man and wife
gave with
small chat
about "As You
Hamuli Nieholf Like It."
Plenty ol time no hurry,"
the man told the driver.
In a New York cab you not
only get a ride but right there
by the meter you have the pic
ture, the number, and the name
of the cab driver.
Robert Young and Betty
jerked forward a little. Both the
actor-radio star and his wife no
ticed it at 'the same time. The
name of the hackman was Rob
ert Young
Bob, the actor, told me when
I talked with him here that no
body would believe it.
"It would sound too much
like a publicity gag," he said.
Promised To Write
So he brought along the cvl-.
dence. An autograph from the
other Robert Young, plus a note
in which the cabbie promised to
write and exchange photo
graphs.
We almost missed our train
to Washington," the actor mem
ber of the team said. "This fel
low wanted to drop by the Stork
club for pictures. I had to turn
it down because I wasn t shaved
I think I was more thrilled than
he was."
Robert Young, the star, is that
way.
In fact, he is right down to
earth. A normal worry wart, to
boot.
When I talked with him he
was fussing about the problems

W. NICHOLS
'tun Write
of a man who sometimes has to
transcribe a show ahead of time,
like Bob does for NBC In the
program called "Father Knows
Best."
Month Ahead
The show is plattered at least
a month ahead of time while the
star Is on the road trying to tell
young drivers to take it easy,
and not act like their dads, in
connection with the highway
safety committee.
One of the shows has Young
as the father with a cold.
"Actually," he said, "I didn't
have one. But they put my voice
through a filter and made me
sound like I had one. It goes on
and on in the script. Me with a
nasal. The copy was written
against time so I could get away.
We cut the record and said a
prayer and away I went."
What is worrying Bob Young
this minute is that the Drozram
will be on the air before he gets
back to appear in person. That
sounds rather trivial to us folks
who know nothing about doing
mings in advance ana a hurry,
Apoloav Mad
"Look what has happened to
otner stars, he complained.
"One of them transcribed a pro
gram a year or so back in which
he had a guest star. The dav be
fore the platter was to be played
the guest died. The star had to
go on ahead of the transcription
and apologize."
Well, that sort of thing could
happen to Bob Young.
As I left him he was stuffing
pills down his neck like crazy
and sneezing!

Gubitchev Requests
Return To Russia
New York, Mar. 14 (U.R)
Valentin Gubitchev made a per
sonal request through his attor
ney today for court permission
to return to his native Russia
aboard the steamship Batory on
March 20.
But the convicted spy's choice
between 15 years in federal pris
on and deportation was rejected
on a legal technicality, and it
appeared that another legal bat
tle would develop before he is
released for expulsion from this
country as recommended by the
stale department.
Gtibitchcv's attorney. Abra
ham L. Pomerantz, appeared be
fore Federal Judge Sylvester
Ryan, who sentenced Gubitchev
and Judith (Jopion last weeK an-
er their conviction on espionage
conspiracy charges, and announc
ed the Russian's decision,
At request of the state and
justice departments Ryan has
agreed to suspend Gtibitchcv's
sentence provided he leaves the
country by March 24.

The press agent knew how to
take it from there. He called a
chit-chat columnist. The next
day another Ragaway gag was
going the rounds.
"I like to do it if it makes
people chuckle a little bit," he
said. "But it's just a hobby with
me now."
In a good year, Ragaway fig
ures, he can come up with as
many as 1000 good gags without
swiping any ideas or hurting any
body's feelings.

"I say things like: 'Holly

"I'm a doggoned legend, or

Court Will Review
Loyalty Program
Washington. Mar. 14 (U.R)
The supreme court agreed today
to review the constitutionality
of President Truman's govern
ment loyalty program.
The president, in an executive
order, established loyalty boards
in government agencies and an
appeals board. He said member
ship in organiaztions on the sub
versive list compiled by the jus
tice department "would be con
sidered in connection with the
determination of disloyalty."
The joint anti-fascist refugee
committee got on the list when
Supreme Court Justice Tom C
Clark was attorney general. It
sued to get off on the grounds
that the president's loyalty or
der "punishes civil service em
ployees for their thoughts, be
liefs, expressions, and associa
tions." It said also that classifi
cation of any group as subver
sive without a hearing deprives
it of its constitutional rights.
