dress a pu&lic meeting on Mon
day, March 13, at 8 p. m., in the
girls' gymnasium at junior high

for a number of years and is
chairman of the American Le
gion anti-subversive committee
in Oregon.
Browne engineered the means
by which records of communists
in the northwest were turned
over to state and federal author

Be Obtained Locally
Applications for logging per
1 mits may be obtained from Daryl
I Farnham or Robert Stokes at the
forest protection office of the
! state forest patrol at the Four
! Corners on Table Rock road, or
by writing to the state forester at
Salem, according to the two men.
They said that all logging or
similar operations within Oregon
forest areas, where any type of
power equipment is used or
where timber is harvested for
commercial purposes, requires a
permit.
Farnham and Stokes said many
operators apparently are delin
quent. They pointed out that clo
sure of an operation for non-compliance
may result in failure to
secure a permit, and a fine as
well. Permits are valid for only
the year In which issued and for
a specific area indicated.

Express Rates Upped
By Government Group
Washington. Mar. 11 A 10
per cent increase in Railway Ex
Dress agency rates throughout
the country was authorized Fri
day bv the interstate commerce
commission.
First and second class ship
ments of less than a carload are
affected. First class express Is
general merchandise and second
class is food and drink commo
dities. The increase Is effective
on not less than 30 days notice
to the general public.
Commissioner J. Haydon All
dredge was the lone dissenter,
maintaining higher rates would
not result in any increased rev
enue for the agency. Other com
mission members said, however,
that evidence showed clearjy
that Railway Express' revenues
are inadequate to meet increas
ed costs of operation, taxes and
higher wages.

irrigation Water
In Rogue Basin To
Be Good In 1950
Rogue River basin irrigation
water prospects are good for this
season of the year except for pos
sible late season shortages in the
Talent district and Applegate
valley, W. T. Frost, hydraulic
engineer here for the federal
state cooperative snow survey,
said yesterday.
The estimates, based on de
tailed snow surveys, were re
ported by the soil conservation
service in cooperation with the
uregon agricultural experiment
station and the state engineer.
According to Frost, thev assume
normal weather conditions dur
ing the March-June period.
Final forecasts will be issued
on April 7.
Supply Assured Here
According to the report, satis
factory water supply is assured
for the Medford and Rogue River
Irrigation districts it weather
continues normal.
Fourmile lake now holds 7,300
acre feet of water and probably
will accumulate another 7,200
in the spring and summer period.
Fish lake has 4,700 acre feet and
additional inflow of 14,5000 is an
ticipated. This will make about
34,000 acre feet available from
the two sources.
Talent Irrigation district pros
pects are only slightly less sat
isfactory, Frost said. Hiatt lnke
has 4,100 feet with expected in
flow of 5,800 to come. Emigrant
reservoir will fill to an estimated
8.200 and the two reservoirs will
store a total of about 18,000,
slightly less than the average re
quirement. June rains are impor
ant, Frost reported, since they de
termine when reservoired water
will have to be tapped.
Late Shortage Possible
Illinois and Applegate valleys
are said to have good snowcover
on watersheds and water supplies
should be satisfactory except for
late season shortage for late
water rights on the Applegate
river.
Frost stated that the Grants
Pass Irrigation district can ex
pect a good water year about like
lhat of 1948. There probably will
be no need for canal alteration
sine ethe low flow of Rogue river
at Grants Pass is not expected
to drop below a minimum of 900
cubic feet per second.
Fifty per cent of new houses
are being bought by families with
incomes of $2,000 to $4,000.
