Lost Watch Returns
Some 50 Years Late
Johnstown, Pa. (U.R) You
can't keep a good watch down,
especially the large, gold and en
graved timekeepers that were
treasurer by the fashionable back
before the turn of the century.
d George Varner of Johnstown
'as given a gold pocket watch in
1892, a birthday gift from his
father and engraved with his
name. A few years later, the
watch was lost.
Varner later moved to Los
Angeles and died in 1937, but
before he died he relayed his
confidence in the watch to his
two sons, Clarence and Frank.
"It will turn up some time," he
told them. And turn up It did.
Workmen found it while clear
ing land at Grandview ceme
tery m the Johnstown district.
MARRIAGE DIDN'T JELL !
Knoxville (U.Ri James C.
Davis' marriage didn't get past
the wedding ceremony. Davis i
married Barbara Davis. Twoj
days later he filed for divorce,
charging that immediately after,
the ceremony his bride told him
he didn't love him, that the mar
riage was a "grievous mistake"!
and that she didn't intend to
live with him.
GOVERNOR IB "REV."
August, Me. U.R) Gov. Fred
erick G. Payne got the title "rev
erend" without attending divin
ity school. Associates began us
ing the title jokingly when a
typographical error in a maga
zine article made him "Rev."
Payne instead of Gov. Payne.
Lexington, Ky. flJ.R) A high
way safety poster near here, aft
er urging motorists to drive
sanely, adds this postscript: "Re
member, Sonny, that rabbit's
foot didn't save the rabbltl"

RED ROW In a front page splash, the Conservative Evening Stand
ard owned by Lord Beaverbrook (right) charged that Britain's newly
appointed War Minister. John Btrachey (left), was an "avowed Com
munist." The London paper also challenged Strachey to give places
and dates of any public affirmation which would bear out Prima
Minister Attlee's unprecedented defense of the War Minister.
Btrachey's post puts him in a position of prime responsibility lor
counter-espionage against Communists.
