b y electro-coagulation.

method is not
used at the
Clinic."
It is safe to
ur. rirady say that they
have seen a good many persons
there whose tonsils have been
"entirely removed" one or more
times by tonsillectomy.
According to Albert D. Kaiser,
M. D., a recognized authority, in
a series of 403 operations the
tonsils were entirely removed
in only 110 cases. Careful exam
ination of the throat a few weeks
after the operation, in other
words, showed portions of ton
sil still present.
Despite the incessant blah-blah
of the brass specialists, not only
in the "clinics ' but throughout
the country, about the impor
tance of "getting all the tonsil,"
every physician who knows what
the score is knows that more or
less tonsil tissue is left in the
throat after nearly every tosil
lectomy. Not that the operator is at
fault for doing so. On the con
trary, it seems to me, the patient
who retains even a small portion
of one or both tonsils after ton
sillectomy is fortunate. Almost
as fortunate as through he had
been vouchsafed electro-coagulation
(diathermy) treatment in
stead of the atrocious radical
operation.
The purpose of electro-coagulation
of infected tonsils. I beg
to inform the blah-blah man of
the big "clinic" and ten thou
sand other brass throat special
ists, is not to remove the tonsils.
There is no sound reason why a
physician should wish to remove
the tonsils "entirely" except
where there is malignancy or
leprosy or syphilitic chancre or
actinomycosis limited as yet to
the tonsil. The purpose of electro-coagulation
treatment (dia
thermy) is to disinfect, pasteur
ize, drain, edaricate or destroy
the nidus, focus or center of in
fection which the physician be
lieves to be the source of the
fiatient's systemic trouble. The
ess tonsil tissue destroyed to
accomplish this the better.
I have said several times and
1 say again that the medical pro
fession should be ashamed of its
record in regard to the tonsil
problem. If it were really neces
sary to subject children with
merely enlarged tonsils to such
a dangerous operation I would
not dare to speak of it in this
way. But I tell you once more,
parents, uncles, aunts, grandpar
ents and all who have children
to love and cherish, tonsillec
tomy is unjustifiable treatment
for enlarged tonsils. When ton
sils are large enough to obstruct
breathing the comparatively mi
nor and lniiniteiy saier oilice or
home operation called tonsillot
omy will give the necessary re
lief. Tonsillotomy is instantane
ous slicing off of the obstructing
portion of tonsil, neither more
painful nor more dangerous than
the extraction of a tooth.
There are increasing signs that
at least a considerable number
of physicians in general practice
are Deinging to think for them
selves about the tonsil Question.
This is evident in the vast reduc
tion in the number of tonsillec
tomies in the past decade. High
time, too. The thinking of the
rank and file of the profession
in regard to the tonsils has been
anything but scientific since the
era of wholesale tonsillectomy
brought such good pickings to
the ever-ready operators.
In another ten years. I ven
ture to predict, the profession
wil have forgotten tonsillectomy,
at least as a treatment for en
larged tonsils.

that there may be a new sheep
and hay barn built at the county
fairgrounds In time for the 4-H
fall show. Robert Fowler, secre
