Relatively Small Air Units
Needed for Alaska Defense

latively small army, navy and
air units are needed for Alaskan
defense. But even the modest
strength approved by the joint
chiefs of staff is far from being
realized.
In all Alaska, predominantly
an air theater, there are only 13
fighter planes equipped for night
combat.

completed Canadian American
arctic maneuvers.
Lt. Gen. Nathan F. Twining,
air force officer commanding the
unified Alaskan theater, claims
Ills present forces are "inade
quate." Even worse, lie says, it
will take a "couple of years" to
get up to planned strength.
Housing is the chief problem.
Some observers think it may
take three or four years to lick
that one alone.
Twining's theater furnished
the "aggressor" ground and air
forces that fought Canadian
American "allied" forces in
Swcetbriar. It also supplied a
jet fighter squadron to the "al
lied" forces.
The games left no doubt that
the Alaska theater is manned by
tough, well-trained men. But
they also revealed these facts:
1. Alaska's night air defense
consists of the 449th all-weather
fighter squadron of only 13 F-82
twin-Mustangs. Mnj. Robert
Bruce of Jerome, Ida., their com
mander, said the piston engine
planes inevitably must be re
placed by speedier jets. He be
lieved the Mustangs could handle
a B-29 bomber, such as Russia
has copied, but he "would think
a long time" before attacking a
B-36.
2. There is one group of 75
F-80 jet fighters In Alnska. One
squadron of 25 planes, used in
the war games demonstrated that
the problem of keeping jets In
Arctic operation has been
whipped.
3. There Is one battalion com
bat team of probably fewer than
the customary 000 troops and
one anti-aircrart battalion sta
tioned at Fort Richardson and
Ladd air force base, Fairbanks.
The 4th infantry combat team
gave a good account of itself in
trie war games and twice am
bushed the superior "allied"
force, inflicting heavy "casual
ties." Once the maneuver had
to be stopped for 12 hours while
umpires ordered the "aggressor"
unit back to permit an "allied"
river crossing. These artificial
tactical .situation;) indicated how
the cards in the far north are
on the side of the defender.
4. The navy operates two bases
In Alaska arid has two aircraft
patrol squadrons.

That is the opinion of Col. Al
fred F. Kalberer, director of pub
lic information for headauarters
of the Strategic Air Command
at Omaha, Neb. He said:
"Long ago the feeling grew
that the Strategic Air Command
needed a jumping-off place for its
comoai-iype Domntri, wnere
plane would be made ready for
their northern journey, and
whpre personnel could receive
cold-weather supplies and cloth
ing. Rapid City fills that bill."
Conversion of the Rapid City
Base, where thousands of bomb
er crews were trained during the
war, from a temporary installa
tion into a permanent B-36 home
is inder way.
More On Way
The first B-36 was delivered
to the base last July 13. The
base now has eight of the huge
bombers. Ten others are to be
delivered to give the base a full
strength bombardment wing of
18 planes.
The other B-36 base is Cars
well air force base, Ft. Worth,
Tex. It was the first to get the
B-36 when the plane started roll
ing off the production line ?arly
last year and is still the major
B-36 base.
One other base Is scheduled to
get the B-36 soon, Kalberer said.
It Is Fairfield-Suisan, Cal. air
force base.
Approximately $9,000,000 has
been spent on new construction
and improvements at the Rapid
City base since the end of the
war. Kalberer said. The largest
single project was construction
of the world s largest hangar at
a cost of $2,009,317. It will ac
commodate the B-36s.
