A food supply may appear
liberal and varied, and yet un
less milk and green leaf vege
tables are well represented it
may be calcium-poor. Hence the
ordinary mixed diet of Am
ericans and Europeans, at least
along dwellers in cities and
towns, is probably more often
deficient in calcium than in any
other chemical element.
The everyday diet of most of
us does not include a reasonable
amount of milk and green leaf
vegetables, but that is not the
onlv fault of the standard ol
nutrition in America today. The
diet of most Americans is com
posed largely of refined carbo
hydrate food starch, sugar
which yields plenty of calories
but cheats the body of the min
erals, vitamins and nitrogenous
or protein material (amino-acids)
essential tor growth ana repair
That's why 1 call sugar, syrup,
candy, cake, refined white flour,
cornstarch, white break, ice
cream, sweetened carbonated
beverages "cheat foods." They
give a brief "lift" or "refresh
ment" which sustains the body
in a brief snurt of energy, but
such foods does not "stick to the
ribs" and supply the material
liit body requires to keep func
tioning efficiently.
Here are three recommenda
tions which I believe would
bring the level of viu up to the
optimal if they were followed
by everybody:
1. Use plain wheat in the ev
eryday dietary, as described
in pahphlet Wheat to Eat.
2. Make a real salad the first
course of dinner or lunch
every day. A real salad is
a dish of raw herbs.
3. Every growing child should
consume at least a quart
every adult at least Hi
pints of milk dally.
Every growing child or adult
who does not follow these recom
mendations should supplement
his or her diet with the three vi
tamins and three minerals our
typical American diet lacks, as
the Indiana state fair head the

Jet Bomber Crash
Claims Two Lives
Dayton, O., Feb. 25 U.
Two persons including a British
wing commander died in a crash
here Friday of an army B-45 jet
bomber, the Wright field public
relations office announced.
The names of the dead were
not disclosed.
One member of the crw, Capt
J. L. Armstrong of Wright field,
paracnuted from the burning
four-jet bomber and suffered a
broken urm In landing.
