Safety Council To
Give Awards Here
At Dinner Monday

named master of ceremonies lor
the Medford Safety council in
stallation and award dinner
meeting Monday at 6:30 p.m. in
the Pioneer room at the Jack
son hotel.
William Healy, assistant sec
retary of state and former Ash
land Chamber of Commerce
manager, will be the principal
speaker and members of the
Medford schoolboy patrols will
be honored. '
Will Sponsor Boys
Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis and
Active clubs and local members
of Footprinters interna tional
will each -sponsor 10 of the
youths at the dinner. The safe
ty council will have five and an
other club is being lined up as a
sponsor.
City Traffic Sergeant Clyde
Fichtner will present insignia of
participation to the patrol mem
bers, 17 from Washington grade
school, 30 from Jackson school
and 22 from Roosevelt school.
The meeting, which will con
clude at 8:30 p.m. is open to the
public and all interested in at
tending can be handled, a coun
cil spokesman said. Reservations
already have been made by
about 125 people. Many parents
are expected.
Medford Student To
Receive Degree Soon
Forest Grove, Oregon, Feb. 25,
Robert E. Lee, son of Mr. and"
Mrs. R. E. Lee, 103 North Cen
tral avenue, was among the 45
students who completed work
on degrees at the close of the
fall semester at Pacific univer
sity, Dr. M. O. Skarsten, regis
trar, reported last week.
Lee will receive a bachelor of
science degree in optometry, to
be conferred at spring com
menceemnt exercises. He has
one year to go for a doctor of
optometry degree.
He is a member of Omega Ep
silon Phi, national professional
optometric fraternity.

66 Boy Scouts From This Area
To Attend National Jamboree
Detailed plans for local parti
cipation in the big event of the
Boy scout year -- the national
jamboree were announced here
Saturday for the first time, by
scout officials.
Sixty-six boys 36 of them
from Medford will make the
trip to Valley Forge, Pa in
July, according to Dr. Charles
Lemery, jamboree chairman for
the district. Among these will be
15 explorer scouts and six eagle

Siskiyou district and six from
Southern Siskiyou district.
Two Troops
The boys will be organized in
to two troops, with 33 in each.
Each troop will have , four
patrols, and will have a scout
master and two assistant scout
masters. In addition, Cliff Han
sen, council scout executive, and
Dr. Lemery will make the trip
from here.
The boys will travel in the
same train as other scouts from
Section 29, including Salem, Eu
gene, Klamath Falls, and other
areas of District 11, which cm
braces Washington, Oregon,
Montana, Idaho and Alaska,
Leave June 18
The train will leave Medford
on June 18, and will return July
12. The route will include Los
Angeles, the Grand Canyon, Al
buquerque, Denver, St. Louis,
i Pittsburgh and Washington,
ID. C, going, and New York, Ni
agra Falls, Detroit. Chicago,
Rushmore Memorial in the
Black hills, Yellowstone Nation
al park and Portland, returning.
,A11 scouts will use. the same
uniform, Dr. Lemory said, and
it will include shorts, short
sleeved uniform shirts, jamboree
neckerchiefs, overseas caps, and
the jamboree insigne on the right
pocket. Personal equipment will
include, among other things,
changes of clothing, sleeping
bage and toilet articles. Sleep
ing bags and patrol, troop and
unit equipment of scouts from
Ihe Pacific northwest will be
carried at. the jamboree in specially-prepared
'trek carts", two
wheeled affairs with one assign
ed to each patrol. It is thought
that only northwest scouts will
have this item of equipment.
Trade Gadgets'
All boys and leaders will have
"trade gadgets," or small items
such as paper-weights, necker
chief slides, and things of this
nature, all of them representing
the area of the nation from
which the boys come. These will
be used to trade with scouts from
other sections, so that each of the
boys at the jamboree will have
mementos of the jamboree.
More than 40,000 boys and
loaders are expected to attend
the national conclave. Among
the 66 from this council will be
Eagle Scout Lloyd Bishop, Med
ford explorer Post 3, who will
be the council's representative on
the jamboree special service
troop of Region 11, which in
cludes only outstanding Boy
scouts for special duty. Young
Bishop attended the internation
al jamboree in France In 1947.
Precautions Taken
Insurance is being carried for
?ach boy going, Dr. Lemery said,
and elaborate precautions are
being taken for the health, safe
ty and welfare of all scouts on
the trip; At least two medical of
ficers, including Dr. Lemery,
will be on the train from here,
and a system of first aid stations
and medical care arrangements
will be provided at Valley Forge.

Tony Manno Again
To Head YMCA
Tony Manno, president of the
board of directors of the Med
ford YMCA, was re-elected for
another one-year term at a board
meeting held Friday afternoon
The election followed a luncheon
at the 'Y' building.
Other officers elected by the
board included Frank Van Dyke,
first vice - president; Marshall
Bessonette, second vice-president!
Al Henke, treasurer, and Darell
Huson, recording secretary.
The board of trustees, which
is composed of the five officers
and four ether members was also
named by the directors. The four
non-officer members are Mrs.
Victor Birdseye, Mrs. Eugene K.
Peterson, Archie Pierce and B.
L. Nutting..
One third of the board direc
tors of 27 members was named
at the annual membership meet
ing in January.
