North Division
Title Balanced
Seattle, Feb. 24 (U.R) Title
hopes in the Pacific Coast con
ference northern division basket
ball race go on the line tonight
in Moscow, Ida., and Corvallis,
Ore.
The defending champion Ore
gon State Beavers will tangle
with their cross-state University
of Oregon arch-rivals while the
University of Washington tilts
against the improving Idaho
Vandals.
A loss for Washington would
throw them out of any mathe
matical chances for the title. A
win for Oregon would dim the
Beavers' hopes for a repeat
crown.
The Ducks will be gunning for
a win tonight in order to break
a season's jinx of 12 straight
losses away from their home
court.

Modern Education
Successful View
Of Speaker Here
Dr. Rodney Langston, assist
ant professor of elementary edu
cation at the University of Ore
gon, spoke before a group of par
ents and teachers In the Lincoln
school gymnasium Wednesday
afternoon under the sponsorship
of the Medford Council of Par
ents and Teachers.
His subject was "Modern Edu
cation." "We can compare modern ed
ucation with modern medicine
or modern engineering in that
all are based on scientific re
search," said Dr. Langston.
"Modern education uses the best
knowledge we have about chil
dren and society, and the basic
principles underlying human
growth and development.
Doing Better
"We know that it Is success
ful," Dr. Langston continued,
"because standarized achieve
ment tests and college achieve
ment records show that children
are doing belter' under this
broader type of education than
they ever did before." He spoke
especially of the success of the
pupils in the schools of Eugene,
Ore., and In Denver, Colo.
Dr. Langston urged parents
to work with the schools in de
termining what kind of people
we want our children to become
and to help the schools in at
taining that end.
"Reading, writing and arith
metic are important social skills,
but they are not the fundament
als of a good life," Dr. Lang
ston said. "The schools must also
help the child to find his self
respect and to learn to get along
well with other people."

Chiang Requested To

Taipei, Formosa, Feb. 24 (U.R)
The legislative yuan, the highest
law-making body In nationalist
L'hina, decided unanimously to
day to ask Generalissimo Chiang
Kai-shek to resume the presi
dency. The action was taken on
grounds that Acting President
Li Tsung-jen has made no move
to return from the United States,
where, he is recovering from a
stomach ailment.
The legislative yuan does not
have the power to force LI out.
Thus the action was nothing
more than another public spank
