About 30 years ago, a Washing
ton clothier and pants presser.
who wishes he
hadn't, put an
ad in a local
paper. It said:
"We cannot
tell a lie. We've
got a lot of
junk on hand
and hereby of
fer it for sale
at great dis
count." From that
simple begin
ning sprang
what now is
known as the
rummage sale,
held annually on George's birth
day. It's an annual capital night
mare.
People stand in line all night
to get a television set for 77
cents, a typewriter for 99 cents
and a fur coat for $3, and clerks
go nuts.
Wednesday, it got so bad that
a lot of merchants had to let the
people in a few at a time. I
peeked into the window of a
cheap ladies' wear place and
learned why. A couple of "la
dies" were giving a pair of 12
cent pink panties the business in
a tug of war. The elastic on the
top gave away, the pants were
ripped leg apart and the two
women dropped the project and
went on to the next counter.
The merchants keep on offer
ing their "bargains" year after
year and the Washington Star
put out 108 pages, crammed with
ads, the day before the sale
one of the biggest editions in its
history for a week day.
Free Coffee Offered
An arm-chair restaurant, look
ing for business later in the day,
distributed free coffee and
doughnuts to folks standing in
line for one of the cheap televi
sion sets.
Rain or shine and it has
rained on the holiday the last
two years the people flock to
town. Government workers have
the day off.
A look at the ads in the paper
will give you a look-in on what
goes on in Washington on the
day that the capital is a little
more nuts than usual.
1 I One store advertised, for a
' V'ome-on, "smart spring dresses"
for one dollar. Another had wall
paper "In ail shades and prints"
for 22 cents a roll. An auto out
fit offered $24.50 car heaters for
S9.95 and seat covers for $1. i
Dishes For $1.49
A department store advertised
a set of dishes for $-1.49 and a
24 piece, 22 karat "gold trimmed
and initialed" set of glasses for
$9.88 50 cents down.
A camera shop pasted a sign
on the window "roll of film,
nine cents."
One jewelry store offered dia
mond rings at SI, but there was
a catch to it. The ad said that
four lucky numbers drawn had
the privilege of buying a dia
mond for a dollar "selected by
us." You had to buy something
to get a number.
A shoe store attracted a lot of
ladies with an ad that men
tioned buying one pair of shoes
for the regular price and getting
a second pair for a dollar.

1 ets "regular $79 value beaver
dyed coney" for one dollar,
"while they last." They didn't
last long.
Everybody had a come-on ex
cept the banks.
They were closed for the day.

To Appear On ABC
Radio Broadcast
James Dunlevy, manager of
radio station KYJC. today an
nounced that "Gentlemen of the
Fress," an American Broadcast
ing company weekly radio pro
gram, will feature a story told
by Eric Allen Jr., city editor
of The Medford Mail Tribune,
on Tuesday, February 28.
During the program, Allen
will tell of the suspensful five
day search and eventual rescue
of Student Pilot John Kraus,
Ahtioch, Cal., whose training
plane was forced down 40 miles
north of Medford In January,
1949.
Eyewitness Accounts
The program, heard at 8:30
p. m. each Tuesday over KYJC,
is a 30-minute feature in which
leading newspaper reporters and
editors recreate for the listen
ing audience their eyewitness
accounts of the most interesting
or greatest stories they ever cov
ered, Dunlevy said. Their voices
are heard via recordings.
ABC Co-respondent Hank
Weaver, in Hollywood where the
program originates, will intro
duce Allen.
The "Gentlemen of the Press"
broadcasts, with true life dramas
taken from newspaper front
pages, each week features five
or six reporters throughout the
nation with personal "I saw it
happen" accounts of stories they
have covered.

hideaway at Berchtesgaden in
Germany; Elizabeth Garner.
Los Angeles Times, who will tell
of the battle waged by a young
couple to save the life of their
ill two-year-old daughter; Ed
itor James Newton, Concord,
N. H., Independent, who will re
late how an entire community
staged a battle to rescue a man
traoped below the earth, and
Sam Petok, Detroit Free Press,
who covered the Noronic disas
ter last September.
Active Radar Station
Due At Ft. Stevens

The army air force said her to-"

be' established at Ft. Stevens,
Ore., near the mouth of the Co
lumbia river, which is a gateway
to the Hanford, Wash., atomic
energy plant.
The announcement by the
commanding general of the 25
air division said that a "small
detachment of U. S. air force
units will be organized" at the
Ft. Stevens site.

Foreign Policy Said
Costly For Sawmills
Portland, Ore., Feb. 24 (U.R)
The West Coast Lumbermen's
association said today that Amer
ican foreign policy which in ef
fect encouraged imports from
British Columbia cost Pacific
northwest sawmills $30,000,000
in lost export business during
1949.
H. V. Simpson, executive vice
president of the association, raid
British Columbia lumber imports
since 1947 have trebled, with a
resulting loss of $25,000,000 in
business to west coast sawmills.
Simpson asserted the U. S.
government had "sold the west
coast lumber industry down the
river" in world markets, at the
same time opening up domestic
markets to foreign lumber.
