To Defend Title

Bill Petersen today was under
orders by the Portland boxing
commission to defend his north
west heavyweight championship
within 60 days or else.
Commission Chairman Ray
Smith said Petersen, now in Chi
cago, would have to give up the
title if he did not fight here
"shortly." Petersen's last de
fense of the title was against
Hardrock Gordon last November,
which ended in a knockout of
Gordon.
Meanwhile, Portland Match
maker Tex Salkeld of the Na
tional Boxing club said Petersen
told him over the telephone from
Chicago he would defend his
crown against any west coast
heavyweight.
As a result, Salkeld said he
would try to match Joe Kahut
for a main event bout March 14.
against the northwest champion
Salkeld has a standing offer to
World Heavyweight Champion
Ezzard Charles to meet Kahut in
a title match here this summer.

set a blistering pace in the final
period of an interdivisional con
test with Victoria last night to
gain a 7 to 4 Pacific Coast
Hockey League victory.
The Los Angeles Monarchs
also exploded in the final period
to break a tie and take a 6 to 2
southern division win from
Fresno.
In the northern division, the
Seattle Ironmen edged Tacoma
2 to 1 despite efforts of the
Rockets to win by throwing six
forwards into the game.
The Portland Penguins dump
ed division leading New West
minster 5 to 2, also on a final
period, four-goal rally. The win
moved Portland into undisputed
third place in the standings.
