Leader Accepts
Swimming Honors
Jim Morrison, senior patrol
leader of Scout Troop 9, was
handed the winner's cup last
night lor Ms troop s performance
in the second annual Swim-o-roe
held at the YMCA pool for scouts
of the Big Pines district. Pre
sentation was made by J. A. Mc
Dougall, council commissioner.
The six events were under the
supervision of George Goodman
and Don Waldern, members of
Explorer Post 3. Ribbons were
awarded to Dick Purty of the
Braver patrol of Troop 8 for first
place in the inner tube race:
Ken Van Ausdell, Eagle patrol
of Troop 5, for second place,
and to John Faust, Daniel Boone
patrol of Jtoop 9, third place.
Relay Race
In the relay race, the top
three places went to the Eayie
patrol of Troop 3, Mohawk pa
trol of Troop 7, and the Daniel

sonville's Troop 35 attended and
15 scouts and 4 leaders from
Troop 19 in Prospect were here.

January Welfare Bill
Tops December Costs
Both old age assistance and
general assistance through the
Jackson county welfare depart
ment increased In January over
December's totals, the moi.thly
reports of the commission show.
Old age assistance cases num
bered 1,068, and their received
S58.167, as compared to $57,
634. in December for 1,064 cases,
the reports show. General as
sistance was given 263 individ
uals in January at a total cost
of $13,451, as compared to as
sistance in December for 255
persons at a cost of $12,944, In
January. 1849, old age cases
numbered 991 and they re
ceived $43,907 during the month,
while 195 persons received gen
eral assistance totaling $11,515.
Aid to dependent children re
mained at the December level,
with 375 children eared for at a
cost of $14,178 in January and
December's totals being $14,081
for 375 children. Twenty-three
children were cared for in fos
ter homes at a cost of $1,032
an in December 20 wote cared
for at a cost of $1,058.
Aid to the blind In January
totaled $675 for 13 cases.
More than half of all Oregon
traffic accidents occur at inter
sections. There are many ways
to avoid trouble at intersections

Club To Resume Work
Phoenix. Feb. 23 Phoenix
Community club and Youth cen
ter plans to start work again on
the foundation of the new club
house, with work to beain Satur
day, February 25. if weather
permits.
The footing has already been
poured and carpenters are need
ed to help in building the foun
dation forms, witli other neces
sary work still to be done, ac
cording to the committee, and
all who can donate time on Sat
urdays are asked to sign up at
the Phoenix Hardware store, in
dicating the time thev will give.
Those in charge are hopeful
that considerable work can be
accomplished before 6prlng gar
dening and farming begins, and
also wish to finish the building
if possible in time for the an
nual May festival.
