Seashells Tell Of
Weather For Past

day that seashells tell what the
weather was like 60,000,000
years ago.
Dr. Harold C. Urey, Nobel
prize-winning chemist who pio
neered in work on the atom
bomb, said he has unlocked the
seashell's secret.
But he said he did it by grind
ing seashells to powder, not by
holding them to his ear and lis
tening to what poets say is the
echo of the wild waves.
Slightly Cooler
Urey, in a report to industrial
sponsors of the University of
Chicago's research in basic sci
ence, said seashells indicate that
the southeastern United States
was slightly cooler 60,000,000
years ago.
England and Denmark were
a little warmer, he said. But the
climate of England was similar
to that of southeastern United
States, despite a 10 to 15 degree
difference in latitude.
Urey said the temperatures of
prehistoric times are found by
analyzing the ratio between two
types of oxygen found in sea
shells formed ages ago.

The two types of oxygen, he
said, are 0-16, the ordinary kind,
and 0-18. which differs only in
atomic weight. The ratio of 0-16
to 0-18 in the calcium carbonate
in the shells reflects the tem
perature of the environment in
which they were formed, Urey
said.
To find it, he said, the shells
are ground to a powder and
treated with an acid which forms
carbon dioxide gas from the cal-

until such time as an adequate
supply of the hormone is avail
able. The hormone is derived
from the pituitary gland of the
hog and there just aren't enough
hogs in the world to meet the
demand. Until such time as a
method of artificially manufac
turing the compound is evolved,
tne vast majority of arthritis
victims will have to make the
best of what is available today.
Treatment of arthfitis, of vari
ous types, has never been very
spectacular. Rest, heat, reduc
tion programs, phfsical therapy,
exercise, surgical attack on
areas of focal infection, splints,
casts, X-ray treatment and in
ternal medication have, in too
many instances, failed to cure
the disease. The amount of treat
ment given by "healers" employ
ing everything from diathermy
to witchery to victims who
have not secured much relief
from generally accepted proce
dures, has probably enriched the
healers but has done nothing to
add to the store of scientific
knowledge, except, perhaps, as
to what is useless.
Considerable interest has re
cently developed in a treatment
which employs solution of drugs
which are ordinarily used for
the purpose of creating local
anesthesia. For many years it
was feared that if these solutions
were accidentally injected into
a blood vessel, dire results migm
follow. The doctor always used
great care to guard against this
possibility when injecting the
solution into tissues.
Research has shown the fallacy
of this fear. Today, local anes
thetics are injected directly into
the vessels in complications of
gtneral anesthesia when the
heart's action is impeded. Local
anesthetics are also used for in
jection into the blood vessels in
certain cases of hives or other
manifestations of allergy often
with good effect. '
The idea of using local anes
thetics bv injection into the
blood stream in arthritis was
based upon the fact that pain
and disability often seemed out
of proportion to the degree of
actual physical change in the
joint. It was felt mai u me pawn
of arthritis could be relieved by
this method, without disabling
the patient in any way, that in
creased relaxation and activity
would serve to "break the chain"
of the mechanism without the
joint which produced the mis
chief. Sufficient experience has now
been gained in this innovation to
indicate that it is a safe proce
dure, properly controlled, and
and one which has brought great
to slight improvement in many
cases. It is not "touted" as a cure,
but as a means of alleviating
pain and restoring usefulness to
victims of arthritis who have not
responded well to other forms of
available treatment.
The treatment, of necessity,
must be given in a hospital. A
small quantity of anesthetic is
mixed with a large volume of
salt or sugar solution, the whole
of which is then permitted to
enter the circulation, drop by
drop, through an infusion appar
atus. Severe cases may require
daily treatment for a while. Oth
ers may require treatment only
once a week or only when
there is a return of pain and dis
ability. The improvement gained as a
result of this treatment seems to
ho mnrh more "lasting" than
would be expected by the use of
a drug, the only action of which
is to relieve pain. It appears
that when the pain mechanism is
"broken it stimulates me us
tues to self-repair.
This treatment is too new for
critical judgment of Its long
range effect. But those who have
chronic arthritis or rheumatiz in
its earlv stage need not wan
helplessly for the trouble to pro
gress. I recommend that every
one with any sign of chronic
rheumatiz consume not less than

she supplement the daily diet
with calcium and vitamin D as
described in the pamphlet Cal
cium and Rhaumatis, available
on request if you provide a
