U.S. Said Proceeding With Plans
For Radioactive Gas Development
Washington. Feb. 18 (U.R)
Rep. James E. Van Zandt (R.
Pa.), said today that this coun
try is going ahead with develop
ment of radioactive poison gas
and other atomic weapons in ad
dition to A-bombs.
Van Zandt, a member of the
joint congressional atomic en
ergy committee, told a meeting
of the Veterans of Foreign Wars
last night that:
"We are now in the general
field of atomic weapons outside
the bomb alone."
Datailt Withheld
He withheld details for secu
rity reasons. But today, remind
ed of cryptic statements in the
Smyth report on the A-bomb
and in the recent seventh semi
annual report of the atomic en
ergy commission, Van Zandt
told the United Press:
"That is exactly what I had
in mind."
The Smyth report, published
in 1945, said that fission prod
ucts from splitting uranium nu
clei in a chain-reacting atomic
pile might have military use.
"Since they differ chemically
from the uranium, it should be
possible to extract them and use
them like a particularly vicious
form of poison gas," the report
says.
Not Recommended
The report adds that scientists
concluded fission products pro
duced in one day's run of a 10,-000-kilosvatt
pile "might be suf
ficient to make a large area un
inhabitable." The scientists did not recom
mend then that this country use
radioactive poisons in war. But,
the report says, "serious consid
eration was given to the possi
bility that the Germans might
make surprise use of radioactive
poisons."
Presumably similarly "serious
consideration" is now being giv
en to the possibility that the Rus
sians might be developing atom
ic poison gas.
Very Wlda Field

Martin said at the capital a cou
ple of years ago that the air
force was working on the Idea
of "radioactive clouds" with
which a hostile area could be
blanketed from the air.
Van Zandt said that was one
possibility but added, "it is a
very wide field."
In its recent semi-annual re
port to congress, the AEC men
tioned research on "the utiliza
tion of fissionable and radioac
tive materials for military purposes."

Branch Makes Reports
On 1949 Handled Cases
Mrs. Sidney W. Richardson,
secretary-manager of the Med
ford branch of the Oregon State
Humane society, yesterday re
leased her annual report of
cases handled here during 1949.
She reported 50 cruelty cases
investigated during the year that
involved mistreatment of cows,
horses, calves, pigs, goats, cats,
dogs, and birds.
The society humanely destroy
ed 393 cats and 97 dogs, and vet
erinary service was rendered to
67 animals. One case of cruelty
was taken to court. Out of 473
lost dogs reported to the society,
186 were found and returned to
their owners and 52 other dogs
were placed in good homes.

Over For Jury Action
Donald Steele Thompson, 22.
Rogue River, was arraigned in
county Justice court Saturday
morning on a charge of bur
glary not in a dwelling. State
police have accused him of at
tempting to crack the safe in the
Homestead cafe in Rogue River
some time Friday morning.
Thompson waived preliminary
hearing and was bound over to
the sheriff in lieu of $1,500 bail.
