ardent admirer of the cute nine

an excerpt from hit celebrated
poem "In Praiie oi Little Wom

Several years ago an Inter
viewer had me on the air and
one of the questions he tossed a
me was: "What is America!
most interesting city?" I said
"Chicago." That is still my story
Therefore, I was much interest
ed in the lively, hiehlv Jnforma
tive book of inside stuff titled
"Chicago Confidential," by Jack
Lait and Lee Mortimer. This is
some brilliant reporting by
couple of newspapermen who
really know their stuff. Don't
miss it. Especially if you live in
Chicago or are iiguring un visa
ing there soon.
Claca.Jh Husband
What are the Qualifications of
a Class-A husband? That bril
liant newspaperwoman, Baird
Leonard, once stated the quali

in a Grade-A spouse. Some of
these qualifications were: 1. tie
sleeps with his mouth closed. 2.
After he takes his tub the bath
room doesn't look as if the water
main had burst. 3. He likes to
wear evening clothes. 4. He likes
all his wile s menus, a. his pri
vate secretary is a man. 6. When
he goes some place by himself
he remembers what all the wom
en present wore. 7. He never
tells his wile a age.
Asking.
Queries from clients. Q. Al
though the dog is frequently
mentioned in the Bible, and the
cat is not mentioned at all, you
seem to have overlooked the
fact there is nothing said in
praise of the dog. A. The grey
hound is praised In the Bible.
See Proverbs, 30:31. Q. In
"Comln' Thru the Rye" does the
poet refer to a walk through a
cornfield or crossing a river?
A. Refers to crossing River Rye,
northwest Ayrcshire, Scotland.
Q. Are you familiar with a song
titled "Ida, the Wayward Stur
geon"? A. Dwlght Flske wrotu
that song some years ago. Gypsy
Rose Lee used to sing it in bur
lesque. Q. What is the percen
tage of blondes among women in
this country? A. I assume, of
course, you mean natural
blondes. The answer is about 11
per cent.
Please Note.
See it stated Samson and JJell-
lah is "the best short story in
the Bible." That 1 question. 1
would sav the six best short stor
ies in the Bible in order named
are 1. The Prodigal Son. 2. Jo
seph and his Brethren. 3. Sam
son and Delilah. 4. Jonah and
the Whnle. 5. The Good Samar
itan. 6. David and Goliath,
Favorite Actors.
Three of my favorite actors
are now In the same stage play.
I am referring to Henry Fontia.
William Harrigan and Henry
Hull, nil featured In "Mr. Rob
erts." I could go see that show
a couple of times a week and
never get tired of It. As you will
recall, Henry Hull created the
role of Jeeter Lester In "Tobac
co Road." Of Henry's portrayal
of Jeeter Lester, that great
drama critic, Percy Hammond,
said: "It is the greatest perform
ance 1 have seen in forty years
of playgoing."
Sidelights.
A 08 year old New Englander
attributes his long life to adher
ence to the "four browns" diet,
e.g. whole wheat bread, baked
beans, brown eggs and brown
sugar . . . When Edsel Ford was
born, his father. Henrv Ford
was a $15 a week mechanic
working for the Detroit Edison
company. . . . Maine is the only
state in the Union where pois
onous snakes are not found. Most
deadly snake in the country is
tne texas rattlesnake.
Presents.
The Chinese are the world':
greatest givers of presents. In
1806 when Alice Roosevelt mar
ried Nicholas Longworth the
dowager Empress of China gave
her as wedding presents: eight
rolls of brocade, two rings, a
pair of earrings, some white
jade, a white fox coat and an
ermine coat. At the same time all
the King of England gave Alice
for a wedding present was a
snuff box. Kaiser Wilhelm gave
her a bracelet set with a minia
ture of himself.
Doernbecher Plant
Employees Quit Jobs
Portland, Ore., Feb. 17 (U.R
Seven hundred employees of
the Doernbecher Manufacturing
company s Portland furniture
plant and the company-managed
Coalco mill south of Oregon City
observed their first day of no
work today.
The mills were shut down at
8 a. m. today and no reason was
given by company spokesmen or
officials. However, a Doern
becher superintendent told cm
ployces yesterday that he thought
the mills would be closed un
til further notice."
Charles Shelly, business agent
for the United Furniture Work
ers of America, said the company
had increased the number of
Portland mill employees by 75
since last October and that no
market development, to his
knowledge, caused the shutdown.
The company-operated Coalco
mill supplies the production
plnnt here with most of its lum
ber needs.
