bomb carriers.
"You can't defend against an
atomic bomb any more than you
can defend against any other
type of bomb," he told newsmen

Entertain At
Legion Meeting
Five acts of comedy and music
by domiciliary center members
entertained a large turnout of
Legionnaires and auxiliary mem
bers at the armory Wednesday
night. John Kelly, chief of spe
cial services at Camp White, was
master of ceremonies and pro
ducer of the show.
The program opened with
close harmony by the "Four Dis
cords," the new Camp White
quartet. Lotv. Presnell, George
Harker, Franklin Girard and
Kelly sang several comedy num
bers. Bill Earhardt, from Leaven
worth, Kan., an old-time piano
player, entertained with his own
composition and several other
ragtime numbers. He then played
the Red Rose Rag. blindfolded
and with a sheet spread over the
key Board.

Kelly presented his "Plywood
Timber Ticklers." He invented.
I manufactured and operates the
j small wooden figures which do
1 a professional job of tap dancing
j lo music. Franklin "Senator
Claghorn" Girard. as the "Moun
tain Boy," brought forth a long
1 round of applause at the end of
! the fourth act.
The show closed with "Sick
Call," a one-act laugh producer
that brought back memories to
every ex-serviceman. Victor U.
Smith, Bill Earhardt, George
Parker and Girard were in the
sick lineup. Lafe Moe was the
nurse with the "new look," and
Kelly was the "physician."
Chief Asks Aid
At the business meeting of the
post, which preceded the enter
tainment, emor (apt. Leo Weld-
ner, acting chief of the Medford
fire department, told the Le
gionnaires they could aid him
by helping to revitalize and re
activate the volunteer fireman
organization. He said that Med
ford needs more .volunteers and
they must be men who are will
ing to go to school one night a
week. He said the volunteers will
get something out of the train
ing which will be worth while
both in their work with the de
partment and in private life.
Weidner said that the coopera
tion of Medford citizens so far
has been very gratifying.
Post IS voted to cooperate
with other organizations that are
making pjans to raise funds for
the furnishing of the armory
meeting and dining rooms. Earl
Sterigere and Charles Goold
represent the Legion on the arm
ory committee. The Legionnaires
also voted to hold all of their
meetings at the armory from
now on.
Money Raised
Commander Harry Goold an
nounced that the Legion and
40 et 8 have collected $480 for
the March of Dimes.

er's pin of the late Walter Rein
king was presented to the post
by his wife, Mrs. LaMurle Rein
king, to be handed down to the
immediate past commander each
year. The pin was presented to

Bush said the best defense
against the atomic bomb is to
keep it from being dropped. He
indicated that defense efforts
could be concentrated on that.
Sen. Glen T. Taylor (D., Ida.)
said he had it on "good author
ity" that bacteriological warfare
could be a greater killer than the
hydrogen bomb. He said the
United States should help or
ganize a world government to
head off "the possible extinction
of mankind."
