24 New Cases Handled
By Juvenile Ofticers
Twenty-four new cases were
assigned to the county Juvenile
office during January, making a
total of 62 cases carried, and in
volved 16 home visits. 245 of
fice interviews, and five court
hearings. Six youths were jailed
and 13 were detained in their
own homes. Four were placed in
foster homes.
Institutional treatment was
given two boys at the state
training school at Woodburn
and one child was sent to Fair
view home.

Two Sets Of Twin
Calves Born Here

surprised by a rare occurrence
Friday, was even more aston
ished yesterday.
Cullen reported that a regis
tered angus cow gave birth to
twin heifers Friday. He pointed
out that twin calves are a rar
ity and that he had never before
heard of such births in the par
ticular breed. Twins of the same
sex are even more unusual, ac
cording to Cullen.
Yesterday another cow on the
ranch gave birth to twin bulls.
Both sets of twins were sired
by Kirtlnnd Rhea Escort, Sun
beam bull of Kirtland farms,
Cullen said. Dam of the heif
ers was Kirtland Queen Lady,
bought from Kirtland farms.
Cullen only recently joined
the American Aberdeen Angus
Breeders association.
A similar raritv occurred onlv
last month, when E. R. Hull, op
erator of the Red Skin orchard
in the Table Rock area, reported
two sels of twin calves born on
the same day.

Cascade Logging conference, at
the first annual meeting of the
organization held in Chico, Cal.,

duction of the delivered cost of

ferred to the air force weather
station In Honolulu, T. H. He left
Medford today and will sail from
San Francisco to his new post

Science Predicts
9 Hours To Moon

Lincoln, Neb. (U.R) Some
day about 50 years from now, a
space ship may make the 240,-000-mile
trip to the moon, and
return to the earth within 24
hours.
That is the belief of J. P. Col
bert, professor of civil engineer
ing at the University of Nebras
ka. He is confident science will
solve the problem of fueling a
giant rocket ship for the expe
diiton by about the year 2000.
According to Colbert's predic
tions, the ship will take off at
an almost perpendicular angle
and hurtle through the air at the
necessary sevcn-miles-per-second
"escape speed." Once the plane
is clear of the air surrounding
the earth, he said, its rockets can
be cut off and it can coast
through space a large part of
the time.
He estimated the journey will
take about nine hours.
The aircraft will have to land
stern first, Colbert said, using
its rockets to break the impact
of the landing.
The arrival on the moon will
be timed for the "dawn line,"
just as that planet's 336-hour
"day" is beginning, Colbert said.
The temperature there reaches
the hotter-than-boiling point of
214 degrees when the sun is di
rectly overhead, he noted, and
the two-weeks-long "nights" get
as cold at 215 degrees below
zero. Therefore men must plan
to arrive at the most temperate
time, he explained.
Astronomers believe men can
remain safely on the moon one
or two hours before beginning
the return voyage, Colbert said.
The takeoff from the moon
will be far easier, he said, since
its gravity is only one-sixth as
strong as the earth's.
