tory against one loss in the JDJ
league here Friday night by
clubbing the Myrtle Creek hoop
men 40 to 26 in a mix that saw
only eight personal fouls called.
The Pointers piled up a 24 to
10 halftime margin and coasted
the remainder of the way with
reserves. First quarter tally was
14 to 6 and the third period dif
ference was 34 to 16.
Six of the Infractions called
were charged against Central
Point.

Big Game Hunters Have
Better Luck In Forests
Washington, Feb. 4 IU.R
Big game hunters are having bet
ter luck in the national forests.
The forest service reported
today that one out of every four
hunters "got his quarry" during
(he year ending last June 30. It
estimated 1,210,000 big game
hunters bagged 318,000 animals.
That compares with 279,000
animals taken by about the same
number of hunters the previ
ous year.
Bob Hope Gets Champ
Sportsman ABC Award

Movie Comedian Bob Hope was
presented witli the first annual
"champion sportsman of the
year" award tonight by Harry
Wismer, American Broadcasting
company's director of sports.
Hope was chosen by a nation
wide poll of ABC sportsensters
and ranked over such stars as
Joe DiMaggio and Joe Page of
Ihe Yankees, Leon Hart of Notre
Dame, Doak Walker of Southern
Methodist and Jackie Robinson
of the Dodgers.

Gold Hill, Feb. 4 Six points
was all that separated Gold Hill
high from a tie game and a pos
sible major upset in the county
class B conference Saturday but
that half dozen points proved
enough to give undefeated Rogue
River high a 44 to 38 victory.
It was a hard-fought game for
both quintets, always rivals In
any sport, with the margin one
way or the other seldom large.
Both teams were all out for a
victory.
Each team lost two boys via
the personal foul route with the
Chieftains dropping Jacobs and
Purrier late in the fourth quar
ter to hurt their scoring chances.
Gold Hill lost J. Morgan and B.
Morgan who also had helped
their team.
In the prelim the Gold Hill
freshmen pulled a major upset
by handing the Rogue River re
serves their second loss in four
seasons, by the score of 29 to 23.
Gold Hill showed good ball-handling
which overcame much of
what they lacked in height.

points Friday night to help the
Bulldogs down the Crusaders

It was St. Mary's fifth loss

handing the Huskies a 56-46 de
feat. Idaho, winless for five
games this season, stunned Ore
gon 62 to 44.
Tiaht Game Seen
The Beaver-Husky affair got
off to a tight start with the lead
changing hands nine times until
the last ten minutes of the first
half. Then State gained an 18 to
15 advantage and remained
ahead the rest of the game, work
ing up a 31-26 halftime lead.
At Moscow, Ida., Dick Reed,
a skinny, bespectacled junior, the
smallest man on the Vandal
squad,, scored 17 points as he
stole the ball countless times and
often seemed to be on the spot
to take backboard rebounds.
Dick Gcisler canned a free
throw 10 seconds after the game
started and from there on Idaho
outplayed the Ducks. The half
time measure was 23 to 18.
Coach Chuck Findley had his
squad stick to a man-to-man de
fense on Oregon and the Van
dals would not be shaken. Ore
gon, shooting many times in
sheer desperation, made only a
17 per cent average from the
field. Idaho'compiled a 36 per
centage with 24 baskets out of
66 tries.
The Washington-Oregon Slate
affair saw Frank Guisness, one of
Washington's "forward guards,"
steal high point honors for the
night with 18. Louie Soriano,
who usually makes a bumper
share of Husky tallies, was held
to a niggardly five.

Win In AAU
Crazy-Swayze quintet and the
Rogue River team in the local
AAU Basketball league captured
victories in games played Friday
night at the junior high gym.
Both games were close with
the Swayze outfit winning 44 to
32 over the Jacksonville town
team 44 to 32 after leading but
21 lo 18 at the half. Apetz and
Campbell with 18 and 14 points
respective led Swayze. Kitchen
and Sanford were high for
J'ville.
Rogue River took a thriller
from Timber Products 40 to 38
in a game that was close in the
final half after the Rogues held
a 25 to 15 lead at the halftime
buzzer.
Huntoon poured in 15 points
to lead the Rogue River quintet
to victory while Gentry got 10
to lead the timbermen.

Trotter Game
Checks of $172.57 each were
presented to Rogue Valley Base
ball, Inc., and the Medford AAU
Basketball league Saturday as
their portion of proceeds from
the baseball club's sponsored
basketball game last Thursday
night at the senior high when
the Globetrotters played.
The amount the basketball
league and the baseball club re
ceived was half the net after 25
per cent of the net had been paid
to the senior high school and 50
per cent of the net had gone to
the Harlem Globetrotters.

Total admissions paid were
1,533. including 1,015 adults and
518 students.
Expenses totaled $121.63, in
cluding referees, posters, ticket
takers and the like while the
federal tax was $239.69. The
high school received $115.04 as
25 per cent of the net. The
Globetrotters received $581.80.
The gross take was $1,403.50.
The AAU and the baseball
club received equal amounts.

high Black Tornado here Fri
day night when the Rogue val
ley boys invaded the Umpqua
valley to battle the Roseburg
Indians in a non-conference
game for both quintets.
Medford came out on the long
end of a final 56 to 33 count in
a game that saw the boys
coached by Frank Roelandt lead
all the way with everyone on
the squad taking part. Roseburg
never even came close to threat
ening as Medford ran well and
played the game hard.
Tornado Boys
On 'All-Star'
Portland. Ore., Feb. 4 Five
southern Oregon high ichool
boys have been chosen to play
for the Oregon all-stars football
team in the annual Shriners' hos
pital benefit game in Multnomah
stadium here in the fall, it was
announced today.
Two of these five are from
Medford. another pair is from
Grants Pass and the fifth i
Klamath Falls youth.
From the Black Tornado will
be Tackle Leo Parker and Half
back Jack Morris, from Grants

from the Pelicans will be Center

national Baseball league have ap
proved a 150-game schedule to
begin April 18 and end Septem
ber 10.
The league's new entry, Tri
City, joined Spokane, Wenatchee
and Salem as a host club for
season's openers. Tri-City faces
Vancouver, Victoria is at Spo
kane, Yakima at Wenatchee and
Taeoma at Salem.
On April 25 the other four
clubs play their first games at
home with Spokane at Tacoma,
Wenatchee at Vancouver, Tri
City at Yakima and Salem at
Victoria.
San Francisco's civic center
comprises approximately eight
city blocks.
Jack Morris tossed in 17 points
to lead the Tornado scoring
while Larue Smith was second
with 10 points
