ell, who complained that she
never received a call from the
radio quiz shows, was consider
ably disgruntled when she did
get a call and the question:
"In what year did Babe Ruth
set a world's record by hitting 60
home runs?"
"I never saw a baseball game
in my life," the 80-year-old wom
an protested. "I hardly know
what a home run is. I am the
widow of a Methodist preacher."
"Well, then," coaxed the an
nouncer, "just guess."
"All right," signed, Mrs. Sew
ell, "1927."
"You've won $60!" yelped the,
emcee.

she would start paying closer at

passengers when "Romance of
the Highways" is heard over
Station KYJC and ABC's Pacific
coast network today at 10:15a.m.
"The Man Who Sought For
giveness," to be presented today
at 2:30 p.m. on "The Greatest
Story Ever Told," program on
KYJC. is a story about a man
who refuses to forgive another
for a wrong done years before.
There's a smell of sagebrush
In the air as "Music with the
Girls" presents a parkling med
ley of western song hits on a
half-hour musical variety pro
gram today at 3:30 p.m. over
KYJC and ABC.
Songs to be heard include
"Pony Boy," Johnny Mercer's
"I'm an Old Cowhand," that
ever-popular favorite "Home on
the Range" and Stan Jones' out
standing hit, "Ghost Riders in
the Sky."
Texas-born Jacques Abram,
concert pianist acclaimed by
critics as "one of the greatest
masters of the piano," and piano
playing maestro Vincent Lopez
will be guests of two-piano team
Cy Walter and Stan Freeman on
their "Piano Playhouse" pro
gram today at 5:30 p.m. over
Station KYJC.
Waller Wincheli is on at 6 and
8:30 KYJC tonight and Louella
Parsons at 6:15 and 8:45 p.m.
"Trading Post," popular lis
tener's participating program,
moves to a new time on KYJC
starting Monday. Trading Post,
sponsored by Wainscott's will
now be heard on KYJC Monday
through Saturday at 10 a.m.

Survives Disasters
DouKlasville, Ga. (U.P.) First
the boll weevils ate up the cot
ton crop.
Then the mill, the pants fac
tory and every industrial plant
in Douglas county shut down.
One fire burned down the new
church at Lithia Springs and an
other would have burned down
Douglasville if the wind hadn't
changed.
In earlier years, county lead
ers said, such a combination of
disasters would have wiped out
everyone in the county. Diversi
fied farming, however, brought
enough income to take the coun
ty into the winter shaken but
still moving ahead.
A big Thanksgiving party
celebrated not so much the mate
rial blessings of 1949 as the fact
that Douglas county now has the
ability to take rough economic
knocks and still keep going.

Garrett paid a Chinese general
S250 for the rug while serving in
Tientsin with the Marine corps.
Upon his return to the Unit
ed States. Garrett took it to the
Smithsonian institution for ap
praisal. The Smithsonian direc
tor, A. G. Wenley, couldn't ap
praise It because there was only
one other like It In the world,
and it belonged to an Indian po
tentate. Adorned Palace
But Smithsonian records did
show that the rug once adorned
a Chinese palace. It hadn't been
heard of since 1923, when the
palace was abandoned.
Garrett set an arbitrary price
of $150,000 on the rug and until
he can get it, the rug is being
stored in a bank.
Inlaid with five to seven
pounds of solid gold, the rug
measures 7a By a teet.

fisherman made his strike before
his plug hit the water. Nine-year-old
Jerry Bolin swung his rod
back to cast, but before he sent
the plug sailing over the water,
he hooked his 65-year-old grand
mother in the left leg. The hook
was removed at General hospital.
