Industry
Oregon Business
Portland, Feb. 3 (U.R) The
lumber industry in Oregon and
Washington may be "ruined" by
increasing imports from British
Columbia, the West Coast Lum
bermen's association said today.
In a letter to Sen. Guy Cor
don, H. V. Simpson, executive
vice president of the association
said British Columbia producers
were able to undercut American
lumbermen because of lower
wage scales, the devalued Cana
dian dollar, transportation re
strictions and excise taxes.
"Canadian mills, taking ad
vantage of ocean freight savings,
savings on transportation tax
and their discounted dollar have
sharply increased their ship
ments by water to the United
States Atlantic coast," Simpson
wrote.
He pointed out that lumber
produced in British Columbia is
of the same species as that pro
duced in western Oregon and
western Washington, under simi
lar conditions.
Minimum Wage Higher '
But the wage minimum in
Oregon and western Washing
ton is $1.45 per hour, compared
with S1.07V4 per hour in British
Columbia.
"In nearly all markets British
Columbia lumbar is in direct
competition with Oregon and
Washington lumber. On the ba
sis of wage costs alone, most
Canadian mills can undersell
most American mills and have
frequently done so," Simpson
said.
Bulk Of Soldiers
Getting Out Of Army
Washington, Feb. 3 (U.R)
The bulk of the soldiers serving
under the postwar draft are get
ting out at the end of 12 months.

30,800 who either were induct
er or voluntered for 21 months'
service under the peacetime
draft.
The "greatest proportion" of
those remaining are expected to
get out by the end of this month,
an army spokesman said. The
draftees have 30 days beyond
their year to decide.
Army Secretary Gordon Gray
announced last October that sol
diers serving under the peace
time draft would be permitted
to get out after 12 months if they
chose. The reduction in the pe
riod of service was part of the
army's program to get down to
a manpower strength of 630,000
made necessary by budget cuts.
The army started letting out
the "12-monthers" on December
1. All but a handful will become
eligible by the end of this
month.
Chevrolet Sets New
Record For January
Detroit, Feb. 3 (U.R) Chevro
let turned out 149.851 cars and
trucks last month to set a new
January production record for
the General Motors division.
General Manager T. H. Keat
ing said Chevrolet built 113,602
passenger cars and 36,249
trucks, a greater output than the
first two months of 1949 com
bined. Previous January peak
was 133,672 units in 1941.

has a fallen satchel also. So
what? The skin of his face is
probably fallen also so what?
If a person is lacking in intra
abdominal fat and has poor
general muscle tone, he Is apt
to wear his full stomach several
inches lower than the more re
cent snappy model. Not only his
stomach, but his colon, probably
a kidney or two and maybe his
spleen and liver. The whole
works is fallen why pick on
the stomach?
When everything has fallen,
the doctors apply a ten dollar
term to it visceroptosis. If just
the stomach is fallen, which is
unlikely, a five dollar term cov
ers it gastroptosis. Falling of
the insides may sound like a
pretty terrible thing to a poor
geek. Actually, it doesn't usually
amount to much as such.
Now and then a persons may
develop a sagging kidney which
bends the ureter the tube which
leads from the kidney to the
bladder, to such an extent as to
partially obstruct the flow of
urine. 11 some type ot aDciommai
binder is applied tightly enough,
it may force the kidney up to
its original position and relieve
the difficulty while it is being
worn.
A similar binder may also pre
vent the stomach from sagging
all the way into the pelvis, al
though it may cause some blue
ness of the face in the process,
if aDDlied tichtlv enough to be
effective. Inasmuch as sagging of
the stomach doesn t matter very
much, why bother about it?
The way to treat a fallen stom
ach is to put on some weight and
do something to increase the gen
eral muscle tone, if it is worth
treating at all. A support tends
to decrease whatever muscle tone
there may be in the belly wall,
and makes matters worse In the
long run. There are those who
claim, after becoming accustom
ed to the support of a binder,
that they feel better while wear
ing it. Possibly they do, but the
function of the stomach is in no
way affected by it. It doesn't
empty any faster or slower. It
doesn't secrete either faster or
slower.
Falling of the stomach is not
a diagnosis. As such it is not the
cause of anything. It's like old
age there it is so what? Wear
ing one's stomach in the low
oosition does not interfere with
digestion. When a person with
a low stomach lies down, tne
stomach slips up to where it was
originally. Digestion is not im
proved In that position either.
It just doesn't matter.
"Exercise" of the stomach (a
fantastic concept) is often touted
bv cultists as a highly beneficial
procedure. This, the swamls pur
port to accomplish by passing a
surging electr leal current
through the abdomen which
causes a rhythmic contraction of
the belly muscles. This current
issues from a complicated look
ing juke box complete with
lights which flash and pointers
on dials which sway to and fro.
It may be that the Klassy Klinik
has a muscle attachment by this
time. I wouldn't know.

Answer A small part of the raw
white is not digestible. For this rea
son, as I have frequently mentioned,
egg cooked, as you like, is more nu
tritious and more "strengthening" than
raw egg. On the other hand, egg Is
a good source of vitamins A, thia
mine (Bl. riboflavin (Bar, vitamin D,
and contains some vitamin C. vitamin
E and vitamin K. The vitamins are
more or less reduced or destroyed
by cooking. So it Is nearer the trutn
to sav that egg white cannot he as
COMPLETELY digested raw as It can
cooked as you prefer. Incidentally,
an Invalid may be able to drink raw
eggs when eating cooked eggs Is too
difficult.
