CITY Or MEDFORD. OREOU
By
Robert A Duff. Superintendent
Board of Water Commissioners j
cisco is planning to vacation in
Oregon. Washington and Brit
ish Columbia. When's the best
month? The department replied
anywhere from April to October,
depending on whether you like
spring or fall flowers for your
scenery or cool ocean breezes
in midsummer. (Eight above at
Coquille on the coast this week.
Cool? Ooh!)
The first two days of this
week, with the mercury sagging
to 10 below in Salem for the
capitol city's coldest reading on
record, the travel information
department with headquarters
here received 2,257 inquiries
about Oregon as a cool green
vacation land. Last week 3.430
inquiries. Lots of folks planning
to come and see us folks in the
vacation season which is only a
tew months away, even if it
does seem a whole thermometer
away right now.
Most From California
Where does the largest per
centage of inquiries, and sub
sequently the largest number of
tourists, come from? Why, from
none other than that happy hunt
ing ground of the tourist, Cal
ifornia. Ten per cent of our vis'
itors will be from the state to
our south. And Florida, which
gives California what - for in
tourist trade competition, will
send more tourists to Oregon
than any other state in the deep
south.
How come all this early inter
est in Oregon vacations, at this
time when some pessimists are
convinced the ice age is closing
in again? It s developed through
a series of eye-catching, vaca
tion - appealing advertisements
run in several national maga
zines and in newspapers through
out the country publications
with a total circulation of 35.000
000. The department, which is
under the state highway com
mission, is directed by Manley
F. Robison.
Foreigners Coming
Among the thousands of in
quiries already received from
persons planning Oregon vaca
tions this coming season, Robi
son disclosed, arc several from
Spain, Brazil, Mexico. Canada,
Engfand, Turkey, France, Iran,
the Gold Coast of Africa, India,
the Philippines, Malaya. None
yet from Russia.
From Germany have come sev
eral inquiries. Wistful inquiries
about beautiful Oregon scenery
and other attractions wistful
because the persons making the
inquiries can't possibly make it
here financially. But they get
the full treatment of pamphlets
from the departmjnt concern
ing the country Harry Leon Wil
son called the green land.
Have Couragel
The department sends out
about one million folders a year
in answer to inquiries and to
adorn travel bureaus throughout
the country. Last year nearly
lia.uuu inquiries were received
by the department a lot of per
sons intrigued by the green land.
.Radiator of your car crack

Water pipes frozen? Feet frosted?
Suffering from the deep-freeze

Have courage! The warm
months will be here soon, with
the hot months following, spread
ing the heat across the country.
Then you'll be glad, Robison re
minds you, that you re already
living where the tourists from
all other states and from for
eign countries will be coming to
enjoy relreshing vacations. In:

Better House Way
In Building Code
Chicago (U.R) A "modern
ized" building code is expected
to provide housing for many
more persons in the nation's sec
ond most populous city.
The code, approved by unani
mous vote of the city council,
was hailed bv Leverett Lyon,
chief executive officer of the
Chicago Association of Com
merce and Industry, as an "im
portant step for great economy
and efficiency."
Estimates of the number of
dwelling units that could be pro
vided under the less restrictive
rules ran up to 25,000. Lyon said
the new code would be "a good
model for other cities with out
moded building regulations."
Inside City Limits
Prefabricated houses for the
first time can be built inside the
city limits. Plywood, wallboard
and other materials that meet
certain tests can be used in home
construction.
The flexibility of the new
code allows builders to use any
of more than 80 combinations of
various materials that meet
, health and safety tests. Previous
ly they had to choose from a list
of seven specified by city ordi
nance. Cost Not So High
"Builders in Chicago now can
take advantage of new housing
developments," Lyon said. "At
the same time, manufacturers
wil be encouraged to develop
even better, less costly, more ef
ficient materials.
Most of the changes are applic
able in the area outside the city's
tire limits, ' the most congest
ed area around the Lood district.
This area takes up about 36 of
tne city s ill square miles.
Sod House Ranked

Broken Bow, Neb. ftl.R) In
1889, Milt Whitney Irrought his
new bride from Iowa to a sod

they won t live any place else.
Whitney, now 84, and his 83
year-old wife, Annie, refuse to
leave the comfort of their home,
although they could move into a
more modern house.
"Our daughter and son lust

this is where I brought Annie in
1889 from Iowa. We learned that
we could stay if we made some
thing from nothing."
Rents Out Land
From nothing, the Whilncys

But they still continue to live
on the farm. They started out
with a one-room "soddy," but
now they live in a five-room
house finished just after World
War I.
"I call this place 'Poverty

like sin on the outside, but it's
comfortable. Sod is a good insu

in this old sod house," said Mrs.
Whitney.

Your Child's Teeth
Following is the fifth In i ser
ies of question and answer ar
ticles aubmilted by th Southern
Oregon Dental society, in ob
servance of National Children's
Dental Health day, Monday,
Feb. S.
At what ago should a child
begin brushing his teeth?
When all the primary teeth
have erupted, which is usually
between the ages of two and
three years.
Should a parent help th child
with his ioothbrushing?
Yes. In fact the parent will
have to do most of the real
brushing for some time. The
child should be permitted to
wield the brush first and then
the parent should take over and
complete the job. In this way the
child will develop the habit of
regular toothbrushing.

Make Barmen Weep
Davenport, la. (U.R) When
happy customers sing, barkeen-

Iff because of the federal
cabaret tax.
In the last few weeks, several
tavern operators paid taxes of
$300 to $1,000 to the federal gov
ernment because Investigators
tor the internal revenue depart
ment decided the men actually
were operating "cabarets."
One tavern operator said he
had to pay the tax because a
group of spirited customers were
singing as tney stood at the bar.
However, he said he did employ
a piano player to "liven up" the

THE
TO
methods. One good method is
this: With the jaws held slightly
apart, brush the teeth of each
jaw separately. Place the bristles
on the gum and brush the up
per teeth with a downward mo
tion. Reverse the procedure for
the lower teeth, brushing up
ward. Give at least five strokes
to each group of teeth covered
by the brush. The grinding sur
faces should be cleaned with a
scrubbing motion. It is import
ant to brush the tooth surfaces
that touch the tongue as well as
those that touch the checks.
Whan should th teeth be
brushed?
To obtain the best results, the
brushing should be done imme
diately after eating whenever
possible, because food debris
that adheres to the teeth Is one
source of tooth decay. This Is
especially true of sweets.
Which Is better, tooth powder
or past?
There is no essential differ
ence in the cleansing properties
of tooth powder and tootli paste.
For children a paste is probably
preferable because it is easier
to handle and therefore less sub
ject to waste.
Don gum chewing help or
harm th teeth?
