Communist Threat Said By Minister
To Be Moral And Spiritual Problem
Repelling the threat of east
ern world to destroy western
civilization is not a political, so
cial or economic problem but a
moral and spiritual problem, the
Rev. George Bolster, rector of
St. Mark's Episcopal church,
pointed out to Kiwanians at the
luncheon meeting at Rogue Val
ley Country club yesterday.
He said that Christian democ

West Point, Navy To
Exchange Students
West Point, N. Y., Feb. 2
U.R) West Point cadets and mid
shipmen at the United States
naval academy begin a series of
exchange visits tomorrow in the
"spirit of unification," the
United States military academy
said today.
The naval academy will send
120 midshipmen to West Point
and 76 cadets will go to An
napolis in the first of six week
end exchanges to show each
I service how the other trains for
i war.
The swajD of prospective offi
cers of the two academies is de
signed to "encourage a closer
understanding" among the serv
ices, West Point officials said.
Visiting midshipmen will at
tend classes with the cadets and
orientations on army weapons
and training Friday and Satur
day. They will be introduced to
West Point social life at a cadet
hop Saturday night. Cadets visit
ing Annapolis will follow a simi

Reserve Board
Reports Loan Boost
Washington, Feb. 2 U.R)
The federal reserve board re
ported today that total loans,
business loans and investments
held by reporting member banks,
rose during the week ended
January 25.
Business loans made by the
banks rose SIO.000,000 in the
week to $13,871,000,000, but
were $1,510.000,000 'less than in
the comparable week a year ago.
Bank loans to brokers for
carrying or purchasing securi
ties rose $56,000,000 to SI. 328,
1)00.000, and were $19,000,000
Mphpr than a vpar aco.
The banks' holdings of United
States government securities
totaled $37,077,000,000, down
t S54.000.000 on the week, but
f S4.666.000.000 higher than a
year earlier.
bility Is developed to control the
situation.
The minister warned that the
people of the west must "snap
out of a fools' paradise and pipe
dream" and get back into the
church and into the crusade for
the kingdom of God.
Might Change
Western civilization has been
dominant in the affairs of the
world and it has seldom occurred
to those of the western world
that the situation might change
or be challenged, Mr. Bolster
said. However, in the last half
century the most violent attacks
have taken place. There have
been four attacks in this time,
he stated. Two have been re
pelled but the others are men
acing the survival of Christian
democracy. One attack has been
from outside the west and the
other from within.
Mr. Bolster explained that
Japan made the attack from the
outside while Germany struck
from within the west. Both these
attacks, the minister brought
out, might have been successful
had the two nations had atomic
weapons.
Another attack from within in
subtle form, he declared, is the
new attractive ideology of com
munism, the most serious threat
encountered so far to Christian
democracy. He brought out that
communism is a pagan creed that
denies the fundamental concepts
of the west. Communist disci
ples are sure of themselves while
adherents of western democracy
do not seem to know what they
believe.
Mr. Bolster said that the
fourth attack is the steady crum
bling of inner beliefs, standards
and ideals "the moral and spir
itual dry rot in ourselves." Un
less this is stopped, he said, it
will lead to the disintegration
of the western way of life.
