Prices on practically every
thing continue to rise throughout
the world. In Nigeria the price
of a wife is six times what it
was before the war. In 1939, a
Nigerian bachelor could buy a
grade-A wife for the equivalent
of 560. Now high-class wives
are priced at $360. The single
men of Nigeria view this situa
tion with no little indignation.
They have asked that the gov
ernment establish a Wife Price
Control Board. Incidentally, the
price of a wife in Nigeria is not
figured by the beauty of the
bride but by the amount of edu
cation she has, her physical
strength and endurance and her
ability as a cook. Beautiful wom
en who are uneducated and in
efficient as household workers
can be purchased for one-fourth
the price of an intelligent, cap
able female.
Beautiful Brooklyn
Betty Smith's best seller, "A
Tree Grows in Brooklyn," gave
the world a very wrong impres
sion of the beautiful borough
across the bridge. There are, of
course, trees in great abundance
in Brooklyn. I was reminded of
this by the following communi
cation Just received: "I am a re
cent Brooklynite. I love the
place. We live in a frame and
shingle house on a tree-lined
street. We have a thirty-foot
porch. We also have fifty rose
bushes, one hundred strawberry
plants, and a peach tree which
gives us nearly four bushels of
fruit annually. All this in the
heart of Brooklyn."
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. Who
do you say invented the wind
shield wiper for automobiles? A.
Inventor was Sicd Back, of Port
land, Ore., an American of Chi
nese descent. When he originated
the windshield wiper Mr. Back
was already a millionaire so he
didn't patent it. He deemed it a
contribution of his for highway
safety. You don't have to be old
to remember when there were no
windshield wipers and motorists
had to use a cloth to attain visi
bility on rainy nights. Q. Accord
ing to your Horses & Women ex
perts, what type of girl will
make the best wife for a red
haired man? A. Best wife for a
red-haired man is a red-haired
woman. Only red-heads really
understand each other. That's
what our Horses fit Women ex
perts say Still, my father was
red-haired, my mother was a
brunette. And they were happily
married for over forty years.
Spanish Lessons
"On several occasions you
have stated the name of LaJolla,
California, Is pronounced 'Le
Hoya,' " writes a New Yorker.
"That is incorrect. The Spanish
pronotinciatlon of La Jolla is
'Lah-Hohl-yah.' Futhcrmore, the
name La Jolla does not mean
'the jewel,' as so many people be
lieve. It moans 'the cowpath.'
Trend Of Weather
To Determine Crop
Loss In Willamette
Salem, Ore., Feb. 1 (U.R)
The trend of the weather in the
next two weeks may determine
how much damage may' have
been done to fruit trees and
berry vines in the Willamette
valley because of below zero
weather, veteran growers pre
dicted today.
They said a sudden rise in
temperatures might cause wide
spread damage. But if the pre
sent cold spell relinquishes gra
dually, damage may not be so
severe.
Not Yet Known
J. J. Gallagher of the Salem
Nut Growers association con
tacted members of the group
who operate orchards. All were
agreed that extent of the damage
due to the cold would not be
known for a week or two.
Gallagher said: "It is impos
sible to tell at the moment just
how widespread and extensive
the weather damage is to the
walnut and filbert trees."
Damage In 1919
The last time the temperature
slipped below zero in this area
back in December ot 1918
trees and berries were exten
sively damaged in the low areas,
with less damage in the higher
areas.
Growers don t look for any
serious damage to hops in the
valley because the vines are dry
and the roots are covered with
snow.
Marion County Agent H. L.
Riches said the long cold spell
had kept many fruit trees dor
mant. He said:
"If the san was running in
these trees, the unusually cold
weather would kill them. But
in many cases this is not true
and the damage to such trees
should be light."

Why should permanent teeth
bo examined soon after they

So that any cavities may be

Is dental prophylaxis (cleaning
by a dentist) helpful to dental

Brooklyn Topped
Uptown in Manhattan there is
a garage where taxi skippers
owning their own cabs can store
them free of charge. All the
owner asks in return is that the
cabbies buy their gasoline from
him and have him handle their
repair jobs. He gives the taxi
divers a discount of 2'2 cents on
each gnllon of gas. So I was in
formed by a driver who said he
was from Brooklyn. He added:
"Nothing like that in Brooklyn."
So it would seem this is one of
those rare instances in which the
beautiful borough over the
bridge is topped by Manhattan.
State Income Tax
Revenue For 1949
Totals $52,111,792
Salem, Ore., Feb. 1 U.R
The state tax commission report
ed today that income tax collec
tions for the calendar year 1949
amounted to $52,111,792.
Tax collections for 1948 total
ed S59, 203.647. But the commis
sion said that included S9.121,
799 in withholding taxes collect
ed in advance on incomes for
that year, so actually, the 1949
total was an increase of some
$2,000,000 over 1948.
Individuals paid 63 per cent
of the total or $32,927,907. Cor
porations paid taxes of $19,183.
385, a decrease of 1.5 per cent
from the record high corpora
tion excise tax collections of
1948.
Decrease In Returns
A total of 505,538 tax returns
were filed last year, a decrease
of 83,249 from the 1948 filings.
The number of taxable returns
filed in 1949 was only 389,811
compared with 520,342 in 1948.
Ray Smith, tax commissioner in
charge of the income tax divi
sion, said the decrease is due to
the new form of individual in
come tax returns which permits
married persons to file on a
single form, and the increase in
oersonal exemptions which elim
inated several income earners in
the lower brackets.

removing deposits and stains
from the teeth. Removal of these
deposits make it easier for the
dentist to discover the presence
of cavities and other faults.
Does dental prophylaxis harm
the teeth?
No, there is no evidence that
dental prophylaxis given at six
month intervals does any dam
age to the teeth.
Do x-ray pictures of a child's
teeth serve any useful purpose?
They serve several very use
ful purposes. They enable the
dentist to find disease conditions
which otherwise might escape de
tection until serious and perhaps
irreparable damage has been
done. X-ray examinations also
shows whether the permanent
teeth are present in the child's
mouth and reveals early signs
of cavities, the presence of super
numerary (extra) teeth and other
abnormal conditions.
When should a child's teeth
b given sodium flourid appli
cations? The most widely approved pro
cedure consists of a series of
four applications at the ages of
3', 7, 10, and 13 years.
Does the sodium flourid treat
ment keep a child completely
free from tooth decay?
No, the treatment is only a
partial preventative. However,
results of carefully controlled
experiments have shown that
sodium Flouride treatment has
reduced tooth decay by as much
as 40 per cent among large
crowns of children.
When should the process of i
straightening irregular teeth be
started?
There is no set age at which
this operation should be started.
Some irregularities of this kind
require treatment at a relatively
early age while others are best
treated at a later age. The den
tist can determine when such
work should begin.
