Gold Hill, Jan. 28 Dale Smith
and R. Kenneth Palmer left on
Thursday for the south. Palmer
went to Casa Grande, Ariz., and
Smith to Ventura, Calif., where
he is to be employed. About IB
miles south of Dunsmulr their
car hit ice and two cars and
truck were In a mix-up that de
molished Smith's car. Neither
Smith nor Palmer were injured.
The men continued their trip by
bus.

a landscape project for Gold Hill
and Rogue River. Mrs. Paul

art. The committee will meet

Claudette, hope to Join him there
in the near future.

health to American children. In
this connection the Southern
Oregon Dental society has sub
mitted a series oi authoritative
articles on dental health ior chil
dren. For the sake of clarity and
conciseness the articles are pre
sented in question and answer

Whai re tht primary teeth?
The primary teeth are the first
set of teeth that a child develops.
They are also known as the de
ciduous teeth. Normally, a child
has 20 primary teeth.
When do the primary teeth ap
pear? '
Generally, tne ursr primmy
tooth erupts when the child is
about six months old and the set
usually is complete at the age of
two years. There is considerable
variation In eruption time, How
ever, especially in the age at
whirrs the first tooth appears.
Some children have the nrsi
tooth as early as three montns
and in rare instances a baby is
born with one or more teeth. On
the other hand, some children
reach the age of one year oeiore
the first tooth erupts.
Since the primary teeth are
lost in time is It necessary to
take car of themr
Yes. Care of the primary teeth
is exceedingly important to later
dental health. Moreover, since
the child uses the primary teeth
for about the first 13 years or
approximately one-fifth of his
normal lifetime It is most im
portant that they be maintained
in the h.'Blthiest possible condi
tion so that they can efficiently
perform their Job of chewing
food.
Should the primary teeth be
tilled or do such fillings have an
injurious effect on the second
teeth?
If a primary tooth begins to
decay, it should be filled in or
der to check the decay process
and preserve usefulness of the
tooth for the maximum period
intended by nature. Fillings In
primary teeth produce no harm
ful effects on the second teeth.
Must a defective primary
tooth be kept in the mouth io
maintain the proper space ior
the succeeding permanent tooth?
No. If a defective tooth can
not be filled properly or other
wise treated to restore it to
health and usefulness, it should
be extracted. After the extrac
tion the dentist can determine
by examination whether it is
necessary to insert a device
called a space malntalner to in
sure proper eruption of the per
manent tooth.

Not as a rule. Often the lanced
gums heal before tht tooth erupt
and the formation of scar tissue
makes it even mor difficult for
the tooth to push its way through.

Oregon Growers To
Raise Fewer Turkeys
Oregon growers intent to raise
less turkeys during 1950, accord
ing to the weekly egg and poul
try markets review prepared by
the Oregon State college exten
sion service. January 1 intentions
indicate a crop of about 1,800,
000 turkeys, down six per cent
from a year ago. Compared to
the 1942-46 average, present In
tentions are down 35 per cent.
California and Washington
growers will not cut their 1950
nrnduction as much as Oregon
farmers, the extension service
reported. For the nation as a
whole, the United States depart
ment of agriculture said produc
ers will increase the number of
birds put on the market. Produc
tion m reach 41.900,000 tur
keys or one per cent above 1949
production.
