A nose bleed
results from a torn blood vessel
which is usually located in the
septum or wall which separates
the two nostrils. Obviously, the
bleeding which arises from a
blow needs no consideration
here. The nose bleed which fre
quently, or occasionally occurs
for no apparent reason is the sub
ject today.
Whether you know it or not,
my bleeding friend, most nose
bleeds of this type are caused by
the habit of picking the nose. It
sounds revolting, doesn't it? Well
that is the reason why I asked
the purely curious folks to pass
this one up.
There are people, victims of
frequent nose bleed, who do not
seem to understand this. Well,
here is the way it works out.
When the natural mucus secre
tion of the nose dries out within
the nose, it produces a crust. This
crust, becoming anchored by the
hairs within the nose, tends to
increase in size and before long
manifests its presence by a
slight irritation or obstruction. If
this crust is forcibly detached by
the finger nail, it is inevitable
that a slight injury is produced,
both by uprooting several hairs
and some degree of unnecessary
gouging of the nasal lining.
The injured site promptly
seeks to protect itself by an in
crease of mucus. When this dries,
and again is forcibly .removed,
further damage results. After a
few episodes of this type, the in
volved area becomes inflammed
and infected, with still more
crusting. A vicious cycle is then
in progress. Repeated Injury fi
nally results in the formation of
a small ulver which exposes one
or more veins of appreciable
size.
Veins are thin-walled struc
tures and may be torn quite read
ily. The busy nose-excavator may
pursue his habit unconsciously,
even while sleeping. When a
vein is torn, hemorrhage is im
mediate and due to the location
of the vein, difficult to control
When coagulation of the blood
occurs, with stoppage of the
bleeding, the newly formed clot
may again be detached with very
slight force. Blowing the nose
may detach it, and re-start the
bleeding. Very slight exploration
of the nose with the finger is
bound to dislodge the coagulum.
(Clot).
Without effective treatment
these hemorrhages are often
alarming. In some cases, persist
ence in the habit of nose-pick'
ing has resulted In complete per
foration of the septum, to the
extent that the thumb and fore
finger placed in each nostril
meet in the midline.
Permanent cure of this condi
tion is possible, with a physi-
cian's care and a change in

hemorrhage. Crust formation
may be reduced to a minimum
by smearing a thin film of petro
leum jelly around the interior
of the nostrils, and by resisting
the desire to pick the crust
away. Gentle blowing of the
nose togetner wun me smiling
of a little warm water from the
palm, will usually dispose of the
crusts.
The Dlucklns of hairs from the
interior of the nose is a danger
ous pastime. Infection in this
area has led to fatalities. The
hairs should be clipped, when
excessive or unsightly,
Nose bleeding may result from
systemic diseases also. Persist
ent or recurring nose b 1 e o d
should have a physician s atten
tion under any circumstances.

To Wed Young Clerk

peror Hirohito's 20-y ear-old
daughter, Princess Kazuko, was
betrothed today to a young gov
ernment clerk earning $20 a
month.
The prospective bridegroom is
Toshimichi Takasukasa, 26, only
son of the chief priest of Tokyo's
Meiji shrine and cousin to Dow
ager Empress Sadako.
Dressed in striped pants and
a swallow tail coat, the Takasu
kasa, father and son, held an un
precedented press conference in
the 61-year-old priest's small
home on -.the Shinto shrine
grounds.
The young man learned of his
good fortune when the vice chlel
chamberlain of the imperial
household called on him at 1
