Coal Being
In Many Industries

Government and industry figures
showed today that coal is being
replaced by other fuels to an in
creasing extent in homes and in
dustry because of the - uncer
tainty of supplies.
During the past 10 years, the
use of oil for home heat has more
than doubled while coal use has
declined 27 per cent from its
wartime peak.
In industry too, particularly
the railroads, coal is being re
placed by oil and gas. Railroad
officials said the coal-burning
locomotives are being replaced
by diesel electric engines "wher
ever possible, or economically
feasible."
Unrest. Major Factor
Government officials would
not blame the decline on coal
use on any one factor, but cited
the continued mine labor unrest
ai "a major contributing factor
to the uncertainty of supply
which faces both home owners
and industries."
Another factor by the govern
ment and industry sources for
the switch away from coal is the
"ease of use" of oil or gas. ,
"When you've an oil or gas
burner," one oil industry spokes
man said, "you don't have to
haul out ashes. It's easier, and
that's one major reason many
home owners are switching."
Steel industry has always been
the heaviest user of coal. It still
it, since steel-making requires
coke and carbon. But even in the
steel industry some furnaces
once fed by coal are now burning
oil, according to an oil industry
source.
Utilities Experiment
Another major' user of coal has
been the electrical utility indus
try. Here there has been a mark
ed tendency during the past year
to "experiment" with gas and
oil. The federal power commis
sion reported that many major

Chicago area have tried using
both gas and oil during the past
year in addition to or as replace
ment for coal.
"They have Installed dupli
cate equipment, so that on an
hour's notice they can switch
from coal to either oil or gas,"
the FPC reported. "In some in
stances they are using coal dur
ing the week and oil or gas on
week-ends, to cut down their
costs. Some have switched from
100 per cent coal to using no coal
at all."
The Consolidated Edison corn
company, New York, one of the
nation's largest utilities, report-
en that availability at all times
and a "stable labor situation in
the oil industry" are. the major
reasons for the company sb'ft
away from coal.
Farmers Of Texas
Lead Nation In
Dollar Earnings

Iowa farmers, long heralded as
the nation's richest, have drop
ped behind Texas and California
growers in dollar earnings, the
agricultural department reported
today.
The department said Texas
topped all states in money col
lected by farmers from market
ings of farm products during
January-November, 1949. Cali
fornia ran second.
Iowa Third
Down in third place were
Iowa's farmers, who led the field
with an all-time record high
cash total in 1947. Iowa was
barely edged out for the lead
by California in 1948.
For the nation as a whole.
1949 farm marketings brought
farmers about 10 per cent less
cash than the previous year. The
drop is continuing. The depart
ment estimated today that farm
ers this month will get about 10
per cent less from marketings
than they received during Jan
uary, 1948.
As for 1949, officials said the
final state-by-state total of farm
ers' cash receipts for the entire
12 months probably will not be
compiled for another month. The
final figures are not expected
to challenge Texas' leadership.
First Time For Texas
It was believed to .be the first
time that Texas led the field. In
the previous nine years, Iowa had
held first place four times, Cali
fornia five times.
Texas Jumped from third to
first place with a record 1949
cotton crop. This came at a time
when prices for hogs Iowa's
principal farm market item had
fallen considerably below 1948
levels. Texas was the only major
farm state in which 1949 cash
receipts exceeded 1948.

Slight Losses In
State Employment

Although manufacturing employ
ment hi Oregon in December was
1,400 more than a year before,
slight losses in construction and
service industries brought the
number of all non-farm jobs
down to 416,200, the state un
employment compensation com
mission reported today.
That showed a drop of 2,700
from December of 1948. A gain
of 5,900 in lumber or wood prod
ucts employment was responsible
for the higher industrial figure.
Lumbering Leads
The new series of employment
estimates, based upon current re
ports of a representative sample
of employers all over Oregon,
was prepared under a co-operative
program recently entered
into by the commission and the
U. S. bureau of labor statistics.
About 30 per cent of Oregon's
non-farm workers were employ
ed in manufacturing witli one
industry lumbering account
ing for 73,700 or 60.2 per cent
of the 122,500 total.
Other durable goods, including
furniture, machinery and metals,
declined slightly during the year.
Little change between November
and December was shown by
"other manufacturing" with lum
ber and canning and preserving
accounting for the seasonal drop
of 7,400. Printing and publishing
was the only non-durable group
to report more Jobs than the
previous month or year.
Holiday hiring by retail trade
and governmental agencies was
responsible for a 30-day gain of
2,300 in non-manufacturing lines,
although the total of 293,700 was
4,100 below December, 1948. The
Christmas mail rush added 2,500
persons and merchants hired 3,
200 additional.
Seasonal layoffs in construc
tion affected 2,100 workers. The
December report of 20,000 was
2,400 lower than a year before.
Transportation and utility em
ployment was estimated at 43,000
in December, a decline of 600
from the previous month and
2.800 from a year ago. Most of
the decrease came from inter
state railroads and transportatio
services, while utilities ren--1,000
fewer workers.

Mayor Gives Up Fight
For Peddlers' Tax
Portland, Ore., Jan. 26 (U.R)
Mayor Dorothy McCollough Lee
today gave up her fight to levy
a $25 tax on non-residents doing
business within the city limits
of Portland.
The mayor, at a council meet
ing, moved that the proposed tax
be filed and given no further
consideration. The motion was
adopted unanimously by the
council.
Earlier, the council in a
sweeping economy move to meet
emergency financial problems
slashed a total of $589,086 from
items budgeted for expenditure
during the remainder of the fis
cal year ending June 30.
