His bus fare to city hall cost
a dime.
"I hope they're satisfied," Bax

Your Health and Its Care
By DR. WILLIAM RADV, M.O.
Readers should address 1-lo.ulrlo tat Dr. William Irsdy,

DO YOU BLU
A young lady of fourteen
writes me a letter which greatly
increases my respect for her age i
group. cne
blushes upon
the slightest
pro vocation,
she states, and
has been trying
to over come
this difficulty
to the best of
her ability.
She Is becom
ing annoyed by

very trifling
matter, to the effect that blush
ing and innocence are very
charming hand-maidens. This
kind of talk is no help at all,
and she is justified in demand
ing to know what can, be done
to help her.
She states that "character
building," whatever that is, is of
no help to her, and that unless
help is forthcoming she will
have to quit school. She does
state whether or not she has
consulted a physician. If she
hasn't, I cannot help but won
der why. The reference to "character-building"
makes me sus
pect that she has confided in
some glib amateur or do-gooder,
who is confusing the issue by
reference to "character."
The difficulty is entirely emo
tional. The state of physical
health has nothing to do with
the matter. At the bottom of the
affair lies an unreasonable and
irrational sensitivity to the opin
ions of others as they pertain
to her. A great many persons are
abnormally sensitive to the eval
uations others may seem to
place upon them. I say SEEM
to, because most often the eval
uation is .suspected rather than
openly' declared.
The young lady Is obsessed by
the notion that those who know
her well, are always waiting to
see her blush and are greatly
amused when she docs. And
when she speaks to strangers,
like Casey At The Bat, she is so
fearful of striking out, blush
ing in this instance, that she
does. A form of stage-fright, ac
tually. The most helpful single re
mark I can offer is this: When
others iook at you and speak to

Situated at the top of historic

lovers who gather for luncheon
once a week and dinner once a
month.
Among other services, it as
sists members 1 n completing
their collection of favorite auth

prints limited editions of books,
sells the copies to members and
then destroys the plates.

SH EASILY?
you, they, more or less like you,
are thinking of themselves and
their -problems not you ana
yours. You might be greatly de
flated if you actually knew how
little the others cared whether
you blushed or not. You weren't
watching to see If they blushed
were you? You weren t con
cerned about them, were you
Then why do you think they are
so much concerned about you?
Because you blush? If you think
that, you are following a line
of thought that in your own ex
perience and consciousness you
know to be false.
I would suggest that you de
velop a sense of contemptuous
ness for the opinions of others,
rather it would be well to react
to others with a certain degree
of indifference. After all, you are
really reacting to your own opin
ion of what the other fellow Is
thinking. You have no way of
knowing what he thinks actual
ly. I mention indifference be
cause a great many situations
arise which are and should be
a matter of indifference to you.
A public speaker must have
experience to be good at it. That
goes for a golfer, a marksman,
an actor, a surgeon or a sales
man. Wishful thinking, imag
ination and desperation cannot
substitute for experience. Face
your problem. Don't run away
from it. Go ahead and blush.
Don't avoid people. Go out of
your way to meet them. Dare the
situations which make you blush.
After a while, you will find that
you are developing an indiffer
ence to them. After a while you
will realize that the world does
not revolve around you, but that
you are revolving with the
world.
To quit school would be a
ghastly mistake. That amounts
to the desire to escape reality.
Such a move would not cure
you, rather it would fill you with
the life-long conviction of per
sonal inferiority, It would firm
ly establish the pattern of avoid
ing all responsibilities of a try
ing nature on your journey
through life. You know you can't
solve your problems by running
away from them. Face them. And
while you are at it, drop In on
the family doctor. That is what
he is there for.
