Broadening Of Social Security
Coverage Called Gigantic Task

which is considering adminis-

day he is not "rushing" toward
any conclusions.
"This is one of the biggest
problems before the country to
day," the Georgia democrat said.
"I don't want to be rushed on
it."
Ha said the present system is
"discriminatory" to some who
are and are not covered by the
social insurance system. He said
"serious problems" remain to
be worked out.
The finance committee began
another week of hearings today
on the house-approved bill to
expand coverage and enlarge
social security benefits to those
already covered.
State public welfare commis
sioners were here to testify on
the bill. In the main, they favor
the bill. For one thing it cuts
down the cost load to the Individ
ual states.

The house-approved bill would
add 11.000,000 persons to the
35,000,000 now covered by the
social Insurance program. The
house bill would add, among
others, about 4,500.000 self-employed
city dwellers and 3,800.

Sen. Eugene D. Millikin, (R.,
Colo.), demanded to know why
employers were "Junking" old
er workers. The question fol
lowed a statement by Altmeyer
that employers were "reluctant"
to hire old persons. .
"What are you doing to en
courage the employment of these
people?" Millikin asked.
Altmeyer said it was not his
job. But increased coverage by
insurance benefits would help,
however, by cutting down the
risk to the employer, he said.
Reserves Set Aside

fund is not a "temptation" for
extravagant government spend
ing. The trust fund amounts to
reserves set aside for payments
in future years.
"The trust fund may become
a pawn for general treasury fis
cal policies," Millikan said.
Altmeyer said the trust fund
now totals more than $11,000,
000,000 of which $2,228,000,000
is invested back into government
issues.
"The congress and the presi
dent may be tempted by this

Couple winters after they got

yan's logging camp a bunch of
the new breed of government
men hove in on him one day and
put up to him a plan they called
the Rabbit Relief Administra
tion RRA, for short.
The spokesman was an ex-bull-cook
called Double Jaw Murphy.
"Mr. Bunyan," says Double
Jaw, "the rabbits have run out
of panthers. So it's up to you
to join with us to put the rabbits
on relief. We've got the plan,
you've got the money. Simple,
hey?"
Rabbits had always looked out
for themselves. They were big,
tough and bloodthirsty. Never
bothered to eat loggers, for they
liked panthers better.
Hunting panthers, a r abbit
would wait in ambush, then
noose the first one that came
along, the rabbit using his pow
erful rope of a tail. Choking the
panther down, the rabbit would
kick the life out of him in no
time. They had feet like Iron and
hind legs like spring steel. They
thrived for generations on pan
ther meat.
"Now they've run out of pan
ther meat," said Double Jaw
Murphy. 'So there is nothing for
it but the Rabbit Relief Admin
istration." Ruin Of The Rabbits
Paul Bunyan was having a big
bother logging a stand of conky
timber, so he told Double Jaw
and the other government boys
to go ahead, so long as they
didn't worry him or tap him for
too much of what it would take.
By spring Paul Bunvan found
he'd been stuck for more monev
on RRA than he'd ever dreamed
could happen. Besides, a pile of

make up what it cost, Mr. Bun
yan," said Double Jaw Murphy.
"This is to plow up a lot of the
hay land and put in carrots and
lettuce. That's the diet the rab
bits really need carrots and
lettuce, some spinach maybe."
"How'll that do me and my
logging any good?" Paul Bun
yan asked. "Seems to me that
plowing and carrot-putting-in
will only cost more money."
"At first, at first," admitted
Double Jaw. "But in the end
there'll be oodles of rabbit meat.
This trouble you've been hav
ing from the men wanting prime
ribs of beef and big steaks
morning, noon and night will be
over. They'll go for the new
kinds of rabbit meat in a big
way. And all it will cost you
is the growing of carrots and
lettuce. Leave it to us, Mr.
Bunyan."
He did. still having his own
troubles in the woods, and the
government men went on
a-whooping with rabbit relief.
Now it was a project.
The RRVA
The next thing Paul Bunyan
knew the Rabbt Relief Admin
istration had grown into the
Round River Valley Authority
plan called RRVA, for short.
When he did wake up to it he

GOP Asks Explanation
Of Denfeld Dismissal

Republican members of the sen
ate armed services committee to
day formally demanded a "full
and complete" explanation of the
dismissal of Adm. Louis E. Den
feld as chief of naval operations.
The demand was made in a let
ter to Committee Chairman Mil
lard E. Tydings (D. Md.). The let
ter, signed by five of the six GOP
members, asked that Secretary of
Navy Francis P. Matthews be
called to a closed committee session.

Not much. From a rip-snort
ing, up-and-at-'em creature of the I
woods who could lick (and eat;
three times his weight in pan
thers, the rabbit came to be a
poor, trifling beastie, with no
tail on him, no fight in him and
no appetite for anything but let
tuce and carrots and such.
And Paul Bunyan never did
get the loggers to take the rab
bit stew in place of prime ribs
and sirloins. Soon he quit try
ing. Soon after that he just quit
everything. Will he ever come
back? Oh, ho, ho I

Alleged 'Shoplifters'

Police today began rounding up
members of a high school "club"
devoted to shoplifting.
The 10-member ring was bro
ken up yesterday when a de
partment store detective caught
two of the girls, 14 and 16, trying
to get away with some clothing.
At their homes, Juvenile de

than $300. The girls implicated
