Friday night's encounter was

final stanza Doran Van Luc's
foul toss gave Klamath 33 to
S2 edge. Shores knotted the
count with a gifter and then
wished another to put Medford
In front at 6:40. At 6:56 of the
quarter Bill Toole of the Peli
cans missed a foul toss that
would have tied the count once
more. . ,

breach to 35 to 33 on a free

Shores flipped In Medford's
first field goal when the tiff was

The Tornado added five more

In the second period Medford
pulled to gaps of 11 to 5 and 13

life. They narrowed the Tornado
margin to 16 to 14. Toole, Peli
can scoring ace of the evening,
made It 16 to IS with a foul toss

Five seconds later he swiped
the Ball from a Medfordite and
dribbled for a lay-in that put
Klamath In front 17 to 16. Lou
Holzgang added a gift throw for
Klamath 18 to 16 halflirne ad
vantage. Medford got back the lead aft

intermission.
The Black Tornado was a
steady gong most of the way,
coping adequately with Klam
ath's slight height advantage
and showing the ability to come
from behind on the occasions
the visitors pushed In front.
Medford held the Pels' scoring
to five foul shots in the final
canlo. The home five fared lit
tle better with four free and two
field goala making up the tally.
Medford draws a week lay-off
now from competition, seeing its
next action at Central Point on
Saturday, January 28.

Twenty-year-old Don Laz, Uni
versity of Illinois junior, today
pole vaulted over the 15-foot
mark and Into sports fame.
Laz was the second man In
history to vault 15 feet. He
equalled Cornelius Warmerdam's
feat during an inter-squad meet
at Illinois armory.
He never had been within 10
inches of the 15-foot mark be
fore, but Laz said. "I just felt
like I could do it this time." He
missed at 14 feet 4 inches but
made it the second time and then
went straight up to 15.
He missed twice at the 15-foot
mark but cleartd it easily on
the third try.

(Rusty) Russell was promoted to
head football coach.
The unexpected announce
ment was made at a late after
noon press conference by Dr.
Edwin D. Mouzon Jr., chairman
of the SMU faculty athletic com
mittee. Bell, who came to SMU In
1934 as assistant to Football
Coach Ray Morrison, took over
the head coaching job the follow
ing year and led the Mustangs
through a 12-gama perfect sea
son, capped by a Rose Bowl trip,
the only one for a Southwest
conference school.
He has been at SMU since that
time, except for three years in
the navy. Since he succeeded
Morrison, SMU teams have won
43 conference games, lost 25 and
tied four.
