(U.R) Golf's top stars teed off to
day In the upper bracket of the
$10,000 Long Beach open split

R. J. Connolly of Seattle, a
comparative unknown, shot that
2-under-par round yesterday in
the lower bracket despite a
heavy fog that cut visibility at
times to 25 yards.
Because of the bulky field of
327 starters, tournament spon
sors divided them into upper and
lower brackets. The top 120
players from the two days of
play will go into the second
round tomorrow.
Connolly, coming from the
Pacific northwest where fog and
rain are not uncommon, breezed
through his round late in the
afternoon. His steady, method
ical play ate up the Lakewood
course and he sank numerous
long putts.
But the big names, including

Oregon Staters making a per
fect grade point average of 4.00
for fall te.rm, it was announced
this week by the registrar. Ray
mond, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph
Raymond, route 2, is enrolled in
the school of science. The grade
is equilavent to "all A's."
The honor roll of those mak
ing grade averages of 3.50 or
above included 417 students.

Snow Depths In
Mountains Now Up
To Last Year's
Snow depths in the Cascade
mountains are now at about the
same level as at this time last
year, according to W. T. "Jack"
Frost, hydraulic engineer with
the cooperative federal - state
snow survey here. '
Frost recently completed a trip
throughout the mountain area
and has received reports from
four different areas in the moun
tains of southern Oregon, and
while the reports do not have
the official standing of the
monthly winter snow surveys,
they are indicative that the
heavy snows and rains of the
past two weeks have brought
the total well above the defi
ciency noted at the first of the
year.

A total of 31'.i inches of snow,
packed and watered down from
a total of 46 Inches last Wednes
day, was reported from Hyatt
Prairie, Frost said. The temper
ature was 39 above zero there
yesterday. At Lake O' Woods,
snow depth yesterday was 21
inches, down from 48 last week.
Temperature was 29. Fifty-two
inches of snow was reported
from Diamond lake, compared
to 61 last week. An inch of rain
has fallen in the last few days.
