Cold Weather Not To
Kill Forest Budworm
Portland, Ore., Jan. 20 (U.R)
A timber authority today dash
ed any hope lumbermen may
have had that the cold weather
would kill the budworm which
has infested 2,000,000 acres of
trees in the Pacific northwest.
Ernest L. Kolbe, chief forester
of the Western Pine association,
said the insect horde is "just
about frost-proof."
"When it comes to cold, the
budworms can sure take it,"
Kolbe said. "In Quebec and

ern Oregon last winter tempera
tures dropped to 30 below with
out decimating ine ouaworms.
Chances are they could get along
fine at the north pole if they

ganized in tne Howard district,
in January 7 five girls and their
mothers met at the home of Mrs.
William Foley and with the help
of Miss Wintcrmote formed a
sewing club with the following
