Woman Rescued From
Angry Brood Sows
Phoenix, Ariz., Jan. 19 (U.R)
Angry brood sow pigs trampled
and chewed Mrs. Dorothy Meyer
of Phoenix yesterday when she
entered their pen to rescue her
10-year-old Doberman pinsehcr,
Rickey.
The dog jumped into the pen
while being aired on the grounds
of the Phoenix Indian school and
Mrs. Meyer followed.
The hogs knocked her down.
Mrs. Meyer was trampled and
bitten several times. She re
gained her feet, wrapped the dog
in her coat and was knocked
down again.
Her screams and those of her
five-year-old niece, standing out
side the pig pen, attracted Orval
l,, Adams, an irrigation worker.
He beat off the pigs and res
cued the woman and her dog.
Mrs. Meyer was recovering
satisfactorily today.

Strike Of Chrysler
Plant Set Wednesday

CIO United Auto Workers today
ordered a nationwide strike of
90,000 Chrysler corporation em
ployees next Wednesday" unless
pension and other welfare de
mands are met.
Strike notice was served 14
hours after the UAW turned
thumbs down on a Chrysler of
fer of $100 pensions under a new
five year agreement
The offer, similar to that
granted Ford workers last Sep
tember, was termed "totally in
adequate and unacceptable," by
Norman Matthews, national
UAW Chrysler director. .
He called freezing of non
economic provisions of the con
tract for five years "ridiculous."
Changes in union security, griev
ance procedures, seniority and
other matters "are long over
due," he said.
Northwestern Mills
Losing Customers
Washington. Jan. 19 (U.R)
Rep. Russell V. Mack (R., Wash.)
said today that Pacific northwest
lumber mills are losing their At
lantic coast customers to Cana
dian suppliers.
"Something ought to be done,"
Mack said, "to correct this situa
tion before it is too late. Lumber
needs protection against competi
tion from low-wage nations."
Mack made no specific pro
posals for a remedy. He said east
coast states imported nearly
three times as much lumber from
British Columbia in the first 11
months of 1949 as they did in
the 12 months of 1948.
Minimum wages in the Cana
dian mills are 51.05 an hour, 40
cents lower than those in north
west mills, Mack said. A buyers
market in lumber, he said, would
make northwest mills the first
casualties.
