good golf. He had a 72 yesterday
compared with Snead's final 73.

Along with Slamming Sammy,
they each compiled 214 totals,

cost Snead the undisputed title.
He had complained of having
trouble on the greens on his first
round here, despite the fact he
shot a 69. But as play continued
he got worse.

Approval of football's two-platoon
system was the principal is
sue as the National Collegiate
Athletic association rules com
mittee opened its meeting here
today.
The Football Coaches' associa
tion rules committee has recom
mended that two-platoon foot
ball be okayed for at least one
more season, and that even more
substitutes be allowed in order
to help the smaller colleges, the
NCAA group will act on that
recommendation during its three
or four-day session.
Closed Meetings
William J. Bingham of Har
vard, chairman of the committee,
said the group will conduct
closed meetings and probably
will make no announcement on
its decisions until Wednesday.
The coaches suggested that the
rules be changed to allow one
plaver to enter the game be
tween each play. Under the
present rules, an unlimited num
her of substitutions mav be made
during time-outs and when the
ball changes hands, but at no
other time.
This proposed change is de
signed to help the smaller
schools with limited manpower.
If the rule is adopted, a star
player could be pulled out of the
came for a rest, yet sent back
as soon as he Is needed.
Proposed Changes
Other proposed changes under
consideration here would:
1. Conduct the coin toss IS
minutes before the start of the
game to allow coaches to an
nounce their starting lineups (of
fensive or defensive) before the
kickoff.
2. Change the position of the
officials so they can get a better
look at offsides.
9. Forbid an offensive blocker
from striking an opponent on
the head, neck or face with
locked hands.
Youngsters
Score Win
The Youngsters beat the Old
Timers for the second time when
the two auints contended yester
day at Medford Bowling lanes.
A 4,580 pin total was compiled
by the winners while Oldsters
collected 4,451.
The victors took three of the
five games and had high single
game total of 1,023. Hawley of
the voung men got 233 high in
dividual single game score and
986 Individual pin accumulation.

Lineman Of Year Award

Leon Hart, all-Ainerican Notre
Dame end, will received the
"Lineman of the year" award of
the Philadelphia Sports Writers'
association at Its 46th annual
banquet on January 30.
The 245-pound end, who also

To Provide Players
For Far West Club

work with Seattle of the Coast
league for the 1950 season, it
was announced today by Mel
Carpenter, business manager of
the Nuggets. Carpenter empha
sized that there is no "signed,
sealed and delivered" contract
with the Coast league team but
that Earl Shccly, general mana
ger of the Seattle club, has as
sured the Nuggets of player aid.
Carpenter pointed out that a
formal working agreement must
be put through the office of the
National Association of Minor
Leagues and that very few lower
classification clubs are success
ful in signing working agree
ments now because of cut-downs
made by major league teams.
Better Aid Seen
Seattle sent some player help
here last year but Shcely has as
sured Carpenter that there will
be more and better assistance
for 1950. Sheely said he expects
to be in Medford before the
month is over to study the local
situation and to discuss the com
ing season with Carpenter.

Applications Eyed
Carpenter said that several
applications for the positions of
team manager have been re
ceived and are under considera
tion but that no action will be
taken until after the meeting of
stockholders at the Medford ho
tel on January 23.
A Far West league meeting
will be held in Eugene January
20 and 21, Carpenter said, when
the 1950 schedule is expected to
be adopted. Eugene and Reno,
Nov., are new additions to the
league this year and Carpenter
said he expects their presence
in the circuit to add to fan in
terest. Other teams in the eight-
club loop are Klamath Falls,
Redding, Marysville, r'lttsourg
and Willows.
