free throw lino ahd calmly sunk
a gift toss to break a 37-37 tie
and give Medford a 38 to 37 win
over Klamath Falls In a fast and
rough game at Ashland's South
ern Oregon college gym Friday
night. The game was the eve
ning's finale in the first round
of the district four basketball
tournament. Reich's charity
heave came in the closing sec
onds when he was fouled by Jim
Palmer, classy Pelican forward.
Grants Pass surprised every
one but themselves when they
turned back Ashland 41 to 39 in
the waning seconds when Jack
Lutz potted two free throws on
Dommie Provost's foul to break
a 39-39 deadlock.
Ross Tits Score
The first quarter of the Mcd-ford-Klamath
tilt was a nip and
tuck affair with first one and
then the other team taking the
advantage. Midway in the period
the Pels were on top of an 8 to
4 count but the Medford Ben
gals tied it at 10-10 with Jerry
Ross slipping in the tying bucket.
From there Medford kept the
upper hand, holding a slim 14-
12 edge at end of the period.
With four field goals and four
charity tosses, the Al Simpson
gang extended their margin to
28 to 21 at half-time and it look
ed like the rout was on. The
rest did the Klamath boys good.

points over their half-time deficit
to trail 33 to 30 at end of the
three-quarter mark.
K's Narrow Count
Shortly after the final session
got under way Palmer narrowed
the Tornado advantage to 36-34
with a field goal and Jerry
Thorn tied it up with a little less
than two minutes to go, at 37-37.
With about 30 seconds left to
play, Reich was fouled and
dropped in the winning point
wnich gave Medford the right to
battle it out with Grants Pass
for trip to the stato tourna
ment.
Dnrrell Riggs, who turned in
a sparkling game at center, and
Reich went the roule for Med
ford while chest colds forced
Bob Watson, Ross. Jim Cave and
Earl Stelle to take frequent
rests.
Medford got only one field
goal in the second half, by Stelle
at the start of the third period
but collected 10 points on free
throws.
Too much determination seem
ed to be the undoing of Klamath
Falls, losing Jerry Hover, Lcroy
Coleman, Ray Craig and Bob
Rcdkey on fouls. Klamath com
mitted 29 infractions while 14
were called on Medford.
Ashland Holds Lead
Ashland seemed to have things
pretty much under control in
the first half, leading 11 to 5
at the quarter and 20 to 14 when
the teams went to the dressing
rooms. Whilo Ashland was col
lecting seven counters in the
third session, the Cavemen were
accumulating IS to hold a 2 to
27 edge as the stanza closed. A
basket by Wayne Brown late in
the fourth period, after AshlHnd
tried it three-minute stall with a
two-point lead, knotted the
score. The Grizzlies made a gal

of Ourant, Okla., returns to the
national intercollegiate basket
ball tournament here this year
to make a bid for the title it
missed by a field goal in 1942.
The Oklahoma team, coached
by Bloomer Sullivan, is bringing
along two of its former All-Amer-
icans, Cotton Patton and Otho
Curtis, both guards who recently
returned to school after more
than three years in service.
