NATURE WILL N
A correspondent asked
whether I still maintain that 46
is not too old for a woman to
bear her first
child. It re
minds me of
the lady of
dowager type
who consult
ed me in the
first days of
my practice. I
suppose I was
pretty young
in the lady's
est imation. I
tried to put
on a lot of
Dr. Brady
dignity and treat her as I
thought she thought a doctor
should. But I muffed it. "What
Is your age, please?" I asked
just like that. As though it mat
tered. I could see how old the
lady was, couldn't I? It was the
straw that turned the scale
against me. She bridled I
never understood until that mo
ment just what it meant to
bridle and said she had con
sulted me about her present ill
ness and didn't see what , . .
leaving nothing for me to do
but bid her good day.
I do believe and I have said
here repeatedly and indeed
there is a chapter in Little Les
son No. 4 "Preparing for Mater
nity" for copy send ten cents
and stamped self addressed en
velope there is a chapter on
the fitness of a woman of forty
to bear her first baby. But I
do not recall that I ever main
tained that 46 is not too old for
a woman to begin to think of
being tied down, maybe even
having her figure spoiled, by
bearing a baby.
But, in this instance, the cor
respondent lets us in on a se
cret in signing off she tells us
she bore her first child twenty
years ago.
If any sort of contraceptive
measure has actually prevented
conception for twenty years,
the likelihood of conception
occurring now is slim indeed.
This is not just my notion, but
the observation of physicians
with large experience in gyne
cology (diseases of women) and
obstetrics (maternity and child
birth). It seems that nature pen
alizes the practice of contracep
tion by rendering the woman
really sterile, after several
years of it. There appeared in
medical literature recently a re
port of a large number of cases
of sterility in woman, with no
other- cause the gynecologist
could find, except that the wo
man had practiced contracep
tion for several years.
Without reference to anyone's
ethical principles I am of the
opinion that (1) a woman who
is not strong enough or ready
for motherhood should not mar
ry, (2) a man who doesn't hope
his wife will bear him children
as early as that happy denoue
ment may be vouchsafed is not
fit to marry, and (3) mere econ
omic stringency or lack of
means, to employ specialists and
all that snooty business can't
justify contraception even for
just the first year or two not
if the family is to be happy,
healthy and American.

Answer No one can treat hlch
blood pressure intelligently or aately
without knowing what ails the pat
ient. Anyway, you do not Indicate
how you would control the test. If
you are serious about it I advise you
not to monkey with blood pressure.
It Is better. I'm sure, to leave the
blood pressure to the judgment of
your physician.
Worms
Can you tell me how children get
pin worms? Can they be passed from
child to mother? (Mrs. P. W. H.)
Answer Eggs carried by flies, de
posited on food. The eggs are larvae
commonly contaminate water or food
and are present in the saliva of cat
or dog and so are readily carried on
the child's hands to mouth the eggs
are microscopic in size. Yes. child or
mother may pass pinworms to one
another. Pinworma, round worms,
tapeworms, trichina worms, hook
worms, ringworms, are among ths
parasites or pests dealt with in the
booklet "Unbidden Guests" for copy
