The Medford girl came to the
mention oi Hollywood photog
raphers and studio officials while
in the south to visit friends sev
eral months ago. She subse
quently took up the study of
dramatics, posed for photographs
made by Paul Hesse as well as
Mead-Maddick and was offered
an opportunity to work under
the direction of Howard Hawks,
independent Hollywood movie
producer, who considered Miss
Vilas extremely photogenic.
After returning to Medford for
a stay with her family. Miss
Vilas decided against accepting
the contract offer.
Miss Vilas has lived in the val
ley her entire life and was edu
cated in the Medford schools.

graduate, and later was a stu
dent at the University of Oregon
for a year.

Type Pen
Racognlilng that public interest in the ball bearing type
of pen, which has already been introduced to the American
public by several manufacturers, is substantial, the public
will be interested in a statement from Sheaffer as to their
Intentions.
The length and breadth of the Sheaffer development
program on this type of product at least equals, if it does not
surpass any company in the United States.
It would be folly for Sheaffer to suggest that the ball
bearing type of product has no merit. Such is not the case.
This type of product can be demonstrated in rather spectacu
lar ways. It will do some things a fountain pen will not do.
A good fountain pen will do a number of things that the
ball bearing type of product won't do. The Sheaffer research
and development department had had enough experience
with the product to be able to assure the trade that it will not
displace the fountain pen.
It Is SHEAFFER'S INTENTION TO MARKET A BALL
BEARING TYPE PEN SOME TIME THIS YEAR. The pen
now being readied for manufacture is one of substance and
quality.
Because of the legal Involvements on the ball bearing
type product that now exist in the industry, and also because
Sheaffer does not feel it necessary or wise, no member of
the Sheaffer organization is pointing out the shortcomings
or attributes that are readily apparent to the trade and con
suming publie on such products as are now being offered.
This statement of Sheaffer's intentions is not for the
purpose of influencing anyone against the purchase or sale
of any competitive product now offered for sale. It is an
answer to a demand of considerable insistence from many
eubstantial Sheaffer dealers who are interested in the stand
of the Sheaffer Company. As quickly as more definite in
formation is available as to the time the new Sheaffer prod
uct will be introduced, a general announcement will be made
to the Sheaffer dealer organisation, both at home and abroad.
In the meantime, Sheaffer dealers can stock and sell the new
"TRIUMPH" line to their advantage. Never has Sheaffer
offered finer products.

posed plan to remodel, repair
and build additions for the city's
schools. The group met at the

pose of the survey would be to
assist in determining the best

It was pointed, out that the
survey should take into con
sideration all of the factors
which concern the benefit and
welfare of pupils and teachers.
The superintendent stated that
in all probability the survey
would be authorized by the

ployers not certain of the Der
mits required for persons under

Under state law "no minor
shall be employed unless the
employer first obtains a proof of
age certificate or permit from
the commissioner of the bureau
of labor." Limitations are set on
the type of labor a minor may
perform and the conditions that
must exist before he may be em
ployed. A minor without a work
permit Is not eligible for insur
ance benefits, according to the
regulations. Employers must
keep an accurate record of the
wages and hours of workers un
der 18.
