Germany Ahead Of U. S. In
Faster-Than-Sound Flight

who rooted out Germany's aero
nautic secrets for the U. S. army
air forces says the defeated
Nazis hold a 5-to-10-ycar lead on
this country in the field of faster-than-sound
flight. And he
wants the government to do
something about it immediately.
Dr. Paul E. Hemke, head of
the Rensselaer Polytechnic en
gineering department, urges the
United States to establish 25 in
dependent aeronautical research
Institutes similar to the 12 to
18 which the Germans had. Such
institutes should work not only
on war problems, he said, but
also on basic research the kind
which "pays off" in the long run
"This program would cost a
lot of money, but only a sma
fraction of the cost of another
war," he declared.
Although working with the
government, Hcmke's proposed
foundations "must hav- freedom
from political red tape"; the
scientists in charge of each
would be "appointed In the way
we name Justices of the U. S.
supreme court," and the appoint
ments would be permanent and
"free from political Influence or
government control."
Nasls Had Head-Start
Hemke spent more than three
months . leading 25 American
scientists through a labyrinth of
German war secrets. They dis
covered that while the United
States built its first supersonic
wind tunnel about two years ago,
German scientists were "operat
ing them" in 1B35. "Even now,1
he emphasized, "the Germans
have 10 times as many such tun
nels as we have.
"While we are trying hard to
pulj even with the Germans In
supersonlcs. they will oe rorg-
Ing ahead, for their scientists
have the tremendous advantage
of being more mature in this
field," ha warned. "Even if all
research facilities were taken
from them the Allies could not
prevent the German scientists
from thinking.

Obituary
R. W. SHEPHERD
R. W. Shepherd, 83, a resident
of Oregon for 40 years, and of
Medford for the past year,
passed away at a local hospital
this morning.
Mr. Shepherd was born at
Philadelphia, Perm., Aug. 20,
1862.
He is survived by two sons
Robert Shepherd, Medford, and
George A. Shepherd, San Mateo,
Calif., also two grandchildren.
Private funeral services will
be conducted from the Perl Fu
neral Home Monday at 10:30
a. m., with the Rev. Father
George R. Turney, rector of
Saint Mark's Episcopal church
officiating.
FRANK W. LAWRENCE
Services will be held at the
Perl Funeral home Saturday at
2 p. m, for Frank W. Lawrence,
Central Point, who passed away
at a local hospital Thursday
morning. The Rev. D. E. Millard
will officiate and interment will
be in Siskiyou Memorial park.
Mr. Lawrence and his family
had lived at Central Point since
1024, the deceased having been
foreman of the roundhouse at
the Medford Corporation. He
was born In Camden, N. J., June
20, 1883, and was married to
Fanny Austin at Glendlve,
Mont., July 2, 1914.
Survivors are his wife, Fanny,
one daughter, Mrs. Margurite
Reich of Medford and one son,
Sgt. Frank R, Lawrence, now
overseas. Four grandchildren
also survive.
MELISSA GAINES
Last rites for Melissa Gaines,
82, resident of Trail for the past
40 years who passed away at a
Medford hospital Wednesday
afternoon, will be held at the
Community church, Trail, Sat
urday at 10:30 a. m. with the
Rev. D. E. Millard officiating.
Interment will take place in the
Trail cemetery, with the Perl
Funeral home in charge.
Mrs. Gaines leaves no close
relatives. A nephew resides In
Washington and a number of dis
tant relatives live In Medford.
Mrs. Gnlncs was born In Mis
souri Dec. 12, 1884.

STATE IS BELIEF
Men of Oregon's medical pro
fession believe for the most part
that there Is little danger to the
health of Oregonians through the
spread of "tropical" diseases by
returning veterans according to
the last issue of the Oregon
Health bulletin, because Oregon's
climate is not tropical.
Careful consideration has been
given to the potential hazards of
the spread of malaria, tropical
sore, dengue or break-bone fev
er, cholera, plague, trench fever,
yellow fever, fillariasis and the
various dysenteries according to
the release. "Effects of these di
seases will be insignificant when
contrasted with accidents, pneu
monia and tuberculosis or the
many physical defects recently
brought to our attention by se
lective service examinations,"
the bulletin stated.
Malaria Is of special interest
because in pioneer days it was
considered "epidemic In Ore
gon, the article relates. As many
as 440 cases have been reported
In one year, but analysis reveal
ed that all but 23 of these were
either recurrent cases or were
contracted outside of this state.
The Willamette valley, espec
ially in Its central portion, does
harbor the malaria-carrying
Anopheles" mosquito, but its
major activit; Is limited to a
few months of the year, accord
ing to the bulletin.
Health officials are alert to
the problem and surveys are
made not only of current infes
tation, but also the possibility
of any increasing hazard through
construction of water reservoirs,
the bulletin relates.
Probably the greatest public
health hazard In Oregon as re
lated to the return of veterans
from overseas service is the pos
sibility of the spread of dysen
teries of various types, the bul
letin concludes.
