A strong believer in the axiom
that the "Devil finds work for
idle hands," Valentine two and
a half years ago set up in his
garage a woodworking shop for
boys.
He said he did it "to build
something in the minds of the
boys besides getting into trouble."

Starting the shop with Just a
few essential tools, Valentine
says the project now has grown
until it almost has the propor
tions of a full-time business.
"You know how it goes," he
laughed. "You tell one boy some
thing, he tells two more and
those two will tell 10. It start
ed in just my neighborhood and
now it is city-wide, including
about 75 boys."
The idea is for the boys to
come to the shop and build any
thing there tl at they want.
"U a boy wants a wagon, he
can make it; if he wants book
shelves, he can make them. A
boy always appreciates a thing
more if he ha? made it himself,"
said Valentine.
With nil few tools, Valentine
made toys and other salable ar
tiijjes which he'ped buy more
tcfls and equipment. Other in
terested persons contributed
tools until now it is almost a
complete woodworking shop.
The backyard shop also became
too small. A friend then con
tributed the use of a building,
and that's where Valentine's
project is' now.
Results have been quite no
ticeable. Juvenile delinquency
in Shreveport has declined and
in Valentine's own particular
neighborhood it is non-existent.
Valentine does most of the
supervising, but other fathers
also give their time.

up to the youths to put them to
gether and paint them.
The Shreveport Optimists club
recently cited Optimist Valen
tine for his o- tstanding work as
a "Friend of the Boys" and plans
are in progress for the club to
take over the sponsorship of the
workshop. The organization
wants to erect a new building,
to have the shop nearer the cen
ter of the city and thus more
accessible to more boys.

The senate banking committee
was told today that Economic
Stabilizer Chester Bowles favors
an increase in meat prices to
meet higher WEges granted pack
ing house workers.
Frank S. Ketcham, assistant
OPA general counsel, told the
committee that "at this time the
economic stabilizer believes the
price of meats should be increas
ed to take wage increases."
Packinghouse workers recent
ly received a 16-cent-an-hour
wage boost after a walkout and
government seizure of the pack
ing plants. A government fact
finding board recommended
price increases to cover 11 cents
of the 16-cent increase.
The committee by voice vote
approved a resolution providing
the meat and flour subsidies and
continuation of subsidies for Ha
waiian and Puerto Rican cane
sugar. Also" approved was con
tinuation of subsidy payments to
the government operated, Texas
City tin smelter.
AUTO COURT BUILDING
IN FOOTS CREEK AREA

Travers and Allen Anderson.
The structures are of frame con
struction. The two men came
here last October from Oakland,
Calif. Travers was formerly
employed at the Mare Island
navy yard and Allen was with
the board of education in Oakland.

Mar. 1 Hike to Affect Prices

struction Type of Lumber

The Office of Price Administra
tion announced today that it is
increasing ceiling prices at the
mill level for construction type
of Douglas fir, western hemlock
and true fir lumber, effective
March 1.
The average increase will be
about $1.10 per 1,000 board feet,
or three per cent over present
prices. .
On Douglas fir, for example
mill ceilings will be about $40
per 1,000 board feet.
The increases for basic grades
of lumber used in residential
construction will range from $2
to $10 per . 1,000 board feet.
Premiums for special grade and
grain specifications which range
from $1 to $6 per 1,000 board
feet will be eliminated,
Abandonment of the pre
miums is expected to offset to
some extent the price increases
granted in the basic construction
grades.
Seattle, Wash., Feb. 22 "The
lumber price amendment an
nounced in Washington by the
Office, of Price Administration
is a postwar adjustment to the
requirements of home builders
for lumber and has not ben given
as compensation for lumber
wage increases," H. V. Simpson,
executive vice president of the
West Coast Lumbermen's associa
tion said here today. The lum
ber price amendment bears no
comparison whatever with re
cent OPA' increases in steel
prices, Simpson emphasized.
Wartime Distortion
"The Office of Price Adminis
tration is straightening out a
wartime distortion of lumber
prices," Simpson stated. "It is
akin to the cancellation of mili
tary lumber orders after V-J day
and other measures for lumber
trade restoration. For example,
a year ago boards were an urgent
military need. The government
appealed to west coas sawmills
to produce boards above all
other items, although our mills
are not equipped for this pro
duct. The OPA Increased board
prices (o offset the additional
costs of sawing boards. Prices
on unwanted items were not
raised, but were generally de
creased. These items were main
ly 'yard lumber," the kinds used
in everyday building construc
tion. "Those wartime blocks have
continued to shut off any large
flow of everyday building lum
ber in normal trade channels.
During the war the average
west coast mill could not pro
duce them without risk of seri
ous loss. That risk remained
after V-J day and with en
larging lumber production costs
it was no longer a risk but a
certainty of loss.

OIL PRICE JACKED
Price increases of three quar
ters of a cent a gallon on kero
sene and distillate heating oils
has been allowed for the west
coast and Hawaii according to
news dispatches from Washing
ton D. C. The Increase will re
main in effect through June 30,
the dispatch quoted OPA offic
ials as saying. Its purpose is to
encourage production of more
of these fuels and less gasoline.
The Increase applies in Wash
ington, Oregon, Nevada, Calif
ornia. Arizona and Hawaii, the
dispatch stated. OPA described
the price hike as part of a move
to relieve shortages of kerosene
and heating oils. It was said
that if the Pacific coast increase
does not accomplish its purpose
"other measures will be taken,
including a possible reduction
of gasoline prices."
