In the article whinh firnnspH
the doctor's indignation, I said
that far too many children have
been subjected to crude and un
necessary surgery for "ade
noids" they didn't have. I also
said that the scandalous racket
in wholesale tonsil and adenoid
operations which flourished in
me years oi my youth (as a doc
tor) left one wrong impression
on the popular mind and
another wrong impression on
the medical mind. The wrong
impression left in the DODular
mind is that the mere Dresence
of tonsils and adenoid body in
the throat is abnormal; the
wrong impression left in the
medical mind is that it is ne
cessary to "get every bit of ton
sil tissue" when operating for
simple enlargement of tonsils
and adenoids in children or
young adults.
In the article I suggested X
ray treatment to shrink en
larged tonsils and adenoids in
cases where the children's hear
ing is impaired. I said also that
tonsils and adenoids serve two
useful purposes first, they
manufacture blood corpuscles
and second, they protect the
body against infection, respira
tory infections. I didn't mention
one respiratory infection which

of suspiciously high susceptibil

Here I beg to call my Cana
dian colleague's attention to a
book by one of the foremost
authorities on the question of
removing tonsils: "Children's
Tonsils In and Out", published
(Lippincott Co.,) in 1932 by Al
bert D. Kaiser, M. D., Professor
of Pediatrics, U. of R. Medical
School, Rochester, N. Y. Al
though Dr. Kaiser himself seem

period of years, half of them
with tonsils untouched, the
other half with tonsils removed,
seems to me to have shown that
the removal of tonsils is a pro
cedure of questionable value in
the great majority of cases.
For enlarged tonsils and or
adenoids in children under
eight, if obvious obstruction of
breathing makes treatment
treatment necessary, I'd advise
nothing but tonsillotomy "clip
ping" the tonsils. For "septic"
or infected tonsils in older chil
dren or adults, nothing but dia
thermy (electro-coagulation) of
course in the hands of a physi
cian skilled in this most diffi
cult method.

Canker Sores
What causes canker sores In the
