France during World War I. In
193S Secretary of Stato Cordcll
Hull appointed her a delegate
to the penal congress in Berlin.
Speaking of women parolees
under her care, Lt. Col. McKer
nan said that from 80 to 90 per
cent make good. "We get them
clothes, find Jobs and homes for
them, straighten out their love
tangles, sometimes cure their
bodies, and for some cure their
souls," she said. "They come
from all classes of society and
include a percentage of high
school and college graduates,"
she added.

work beginning yesterday, Sam
Mete, owner of the Automobile
Market at Sixth and Bartlett
streets, is erecting a Dy ou
pumice brick garage at 1016 N.
Riverside avenue. Mete hopes
to have the $8,000 project com
pleted In about two months.
Repair section of the structure
will be housed in the basement
and the accessory shop will be
on the main floor. The garage
will function mainly in .renova
tion of used cars. Mete plans,
eventually, to move his entire
automobile business to the new
site which has a 120-foot front
age and a 200-foot depth. The
dealer, for 23 years a resident
of Medford, has operated the
Automobile Market for the past
four years. He resides at 1036
W. 11th street.
Blue Cross Week
Observance Urged
By Governor Snell
February 18 to 23 has been de
signated as Blue Cross Week
throughout the nation. In call
ing attention to its observance,
Governor Earl Snell issued the
following statement:
"The Blue Cross Service,
liroun of 86 non-profit, com
munity-sponsored hospitalization
services, has done much to en
sure the security oi tamiiies
throughout the United States.'
Northwest Hospital Service
Plan, the Oregon Blue Cross or
ganization, is now entering its
fifth year of service in the state
with an enrollment of over B0,-
000 members.
In Oregon and Clark county,
Washington, there are 30 partici
pating hospitals. Sacred Heart
hospital Is tha local member hos
pital.

By Trail Resident
Trail, Feb. 19 Recent killing
six miles north of here of a 200
pound cougar measuring eight
feet in length is reported by L.
W. Oliver who brought the ani
mal down with a 30-30 rifle and
without the aid of dogs. The
animal was shot near the home
of Oliver's father, E. H. Oliver.
Young Oliver was discharged
about two months ago after four
years service in the army. He
saw duty in Alaska and Italy.

Medford was crowned queen of
the Valentine ball held at the
Southern Oregon college Friday
night. Rosemary Messenger and
Maxlne Dicckman of Ashland
were the queen's attendants.
The Valentine motif was car
ried out In elaborate decorations
and in lighting effects. This is
the first semi-formal dance held
at the Southern Oregon college
since war was declared. James
Glenn of Medford was the able
master of ceremonies and In
charge of the dance.

Retailers of sugar were warn
ed today by a wholesale grocer
and the OPA price clerk for this
district that if they raise the
price of any item of sugar be
fore the supplies of that particu
lar item on hand Feb. 9 is ex
hausted, this constitutes a viola
tion of the OPA order granting
the sugar increase as of Feb. 16.
S. A. Gibbs, manager of the
Mason Ehrman company here,
stated that some retailers have
already raised the price of sugar,
and since it is considered unlike
ly they had already exhausted
their Feb. 9 inventory supplies,
this was in violation of the or
der. The order reads: "Special
rules for figuring ceiling prices
for sugar after Feb. 9. At the
close of business on Feb. 9,
1946, you must determine the
number of pounds of each item
of sugar that you own at that
time. You must make and keep
an inventory at your place of
business. After that date you
must continue to sell each item
of sugar at no more than the
ceiling price you had in effect
on Feb. 9 until you have sold an
amount equal to your Feb. 9 in
ventory of the item. When you
have sold that amount, you shall
re-figure your ceiling price for
the item in accordance with the
rules in Section 6."
The OPA price clerk corrobor
ated Mr. Gibbs' statement.
Housewives were advised to
day by OPA to retain in their
possession War Ration Book 4,
now used only to obtain sugar.
Although the currently val
id sugar stamp 39 is the last
stamp in War Ration Book 4 that
is specifically labeled for pur
chases of sugar, spare stamps in
that book will be designated as
sugar stamps from time to time.
For tliis reason, War Ration
Book 4 should be retained even
after Sugar Stamp 39 has been
used, OPA emphasized.
Sugar Stamp 40 was used for
the 1944 home canning program,
OPA explained.

Feb. 19 The first conference
of members of the Oregon Re
tail Distributors' institute since
before the war Is scheduled to
convene on the University of
Oregon campus May 12 and 13,
according to plans made by the
board of directors in a recent
meeting in Portland.
Preliminary arrangements
have been made, announces Dr.
N. H. Cornish, professor of busi
ness administration in the uni
versity, and secretary of the
board.

Ex-C. P. Resident,
Dies In Portland
Clara M. Hawk Baker, former
resident of Central Point for
many years, died Feb. 9 in Port
land.
Born March 5, 1871, in War
ren county, Iowa, Clara Welsh
was married to Franklin A
Hawk at Mankato, Kan., Dec. 19,
1891. The couple moved to Cen
tral Point in 1893 and Mr,
Hawk's death occurred there in
1912. Mrs. Hawk married Lem
uel V. Baker Jan. 7, 1919, and
since that time had resided in
northern Oregon.
Survivors are W. C. (Chick)
Hawk, Portland; Ruth Ketchum,
Seattle; Mrs. George L. Howard,
Medford; two grandchildren,
Cecily Faith Hawk, Cave Junc
tion, Ore., and Bill G. Howard,
Medford; and three great-grandchildren,
Glenda Lee and Jac
queline Kay Howard, Medford,
and Michael Ketchum, Seattle,
One son, Leslie B. Hawk, died
in 1939.
