The young man mentioned
was the only candidate among
a group of more than twenty
youths examined who had a
large chest expansion no less
than five inches: He had follow
ed somebody's mail-order
"course" for development of
"superb manhood" or some
thing of the sort, and he was
obviously proud of his extra
ordinary chest expansion. Not
withstanding that, he had tub
erculosis in one lung, the early
stage. The other young men,

exercise of any kind or deep
breathing ever causes tubercu
losis. I meant to show merely
that physical development, mus
cular strength, athletic activity
or gymnastic skill has nothing
to do with lung tuberculosis or
with freedom from it.
So you need not alter your
program of deep breathing or
dumb bell exercise on that ac
count, son. But don't depend on
your physical vigor to keep you
immune from tuberculosis or
any other Infectius or commun
icable disease.
Other things being equal a
person who gets sufficient ex
ercise regularly may be less
vulnerable or susceptible to
some infectious or communi
cable diseases than one who
takes little or no exercise. But
this Is practically impossible to
prove and it would be foolish
to depend on it.
In the cultivation of good
posture and this should inter
est everybody, young or oia

your posture still further and
who doesn't? you should still
pay no attention to your chest
or the bellows (Webster) but try
to pull your hips closer to
gether. This tends to lessen the
forward curve of the spine and
to correct the tendency to
swayback and the type of spinal

which, by the way, is mainly
due to flabblness from neglect
of physical education, physical
training, adequate general exer
cise in childhood and youth. Of
course this endeavor to pull the

Contrary to popular belief, the
Alcan highway is open at this
time of year according to two
midwestern men who have been
viisting here en route to their
homes from Whitehorse, Yukon
territory.
Starting from Whitehorse on
February 3, David Thompson,
Detroit, and Floyd Schepfer, Ft
Madison, Wis., traveled over the
918-mile route to Dawson Creek,
B. C, in three days. They found
the roads between Dawson Creek
and some of the hard surface
roads of Oregon in worse shape
than the U. S. army maintained
Alcan highway. Repair . camps
are established at points 100
miles apart along the route and
motor patrols keep the way
clear, according to the men who
made the jaunt in a 1939 Ply
mouth pick-up truck.
Hated To Leave
Thompson and Schepfer, who
were employed in the highway's
construction, said that they liked
the country around Whitehorse
and hated to leave, indicating
they would have remained in the
region had it been United States
territory. Much of the country
is yet wild, they stated, remark
ing that 50 miles south of White
horse they had killed a wolf,
weighing 130 pounds, and were
carrying its frozen carcass with
them. Only 74 men from the
United States are left of the
thousands who flocked to White
horse during highway construc
tion days, the two men assert.
Chains Unneaded
The men were required to
have complete safety equipment
and winter clothing but said that
they never once utilized chains
on their tires.
Taking the central route across
the country, via Klamath Falls
and eastern Oregon, the men re
sumed the trip to their homes
Sunday morning. Mrs. Archie
Ferns of Fern Valley and Mrs.
Carl Henry of Ashland are cou

SOVIET USES ITS
London, Feb. 18 (U.R) The
Soviet Union used its security
council veto power for the first
time Saturday by killing a unit
ed States formula for settling
Syrian-Lebanese complaints over
the Dresence of British and
French troops.
The council had no choice but
to declare the case closed with
out action.
Although this was the first
time the veto power of the coun
cil's Big Five, has been used, it
was the second time Soviet dele
gate Andrei I. Vishinsky, chief
defender of the Syrian-Lezanese
claims, had invoked it. In .the
Iranian case before the council
he had threatened to use it it a
resolution was put to a vote,
wasn't.
Syria and Lebanon charged
that British and French troops
in their countries infringed upon
sovereignty. Britain said
wanted to withdraw its troops
as soon as possible but France
declined to make a categorical
promise. The Soviet Union
charged France wanted cultural
economic and strategical guaran
tees in return for withdrawing
troops.

Compulsory Court

Sen. Wayne Morris of Oregon
speaking before the Federation
of Patriotic Societies here Friday
night, declared that compulsory
world court is the next step to
ward securing world peace.
Morse said that permanent
peace will require some very
thorough re-thinklng among the
peoples of the world.

the proposition that unless we
make this peace the final peace
there will be no other peace.

Geology of Southern Oregon

Several years ago Francis
Wells of the U. S. Geological
Survey made a map of the
Grants Pass Quadrangle in co
pe ration with the Oregon
Bureau of Mineral Industries.
Principal rocks of the area were
classified along with a discussion
of their origin and age. princi
pal minerals were also discussed
Including gold and the probable
future of gold mining in the
area.
The Grants Pass Quadrangle In
cludes land from the California
line north to a few miles north
of Grants Pass, and east from a
line about six miles west of
Grants Pass to a line about the
same distance west of Medford.
The map is too technical for
the average prospector. Fortun
ately only a general knowledge
of geology is of benefit to the
miner or prospector. Most gold
mines have been found by men
who know nothing of geology
and of course the name of a rock
has no bearing on its mineral
content.
Age Mo Criterion
However, practically any pros
pector is happy when he can
name a rock and discuss its age
and origin. One can hear al
most any time prospectors state
with definite assurance that the
Sisklyous are composed of the
oldest known rocks and advance
this argument as proof that
southern Oregon must be a great
gold mining region. Truth is
that the age of the rock has no
bearing on its gold content. If
gold is there, it is there and the
man who finds it in commercial
quantity is lucky. That rule
holds for other minerals in a
much less degree as the classi
fications of mineral veins re
veals.
Five Ages Represented
According to Mr. Wells there
are five ages of rock represented
in the area Paleozoic, Juras
sic, Cretaceous, Eocene and
Quaternary.
Paleozoic rocks include the
old schists found on Elliott
Creek; argillites extending in
long bodies from southwest to
northeast and Including lime
stones, quartzlte and chert.
Whiskey Peak is a beautiful ex
ample of banded and folded
chert. The , meta-volcanics of
this age just about cover the
map.
The Jurassic age includes sedi
ments of dark slate found along
nogue river beginning about six
miles west of Grants Pass. The
volcanic flows of this area are
anaesite tiows which compose
Holcomb peak; serpentine which
manes up Iron mountain, Col
lin s mountain, etc.: eabbro is
found on the north side of the
Applegate about one mile below
Newhope. Gabbro is a deep,
coarse grained rock which is
called basalt where it flowed to
the surface.
Basalt is found all over ructorn
Oregon and western Idaho. Ser
pentine can be recognizer! bv It
alteration to talc and soapstone
near contacts. Quartz-diorite Is
supposed to be the plutonic rock
that underlies all other rocks of
the area. It composes such
peaks as Grayback, Palmer and
Boaz mountain. The ridge run
ning north of Jacksonville is
grano-diorite. It would be
called granite if its potash feld
spar exceeded the soda-lime.
Where Coal Formed
The Cretaceous Age is repre
sented by the dark green, gritty
sandstone found along Jackson

creek. Coal was formed In this
period.
The Eocene Age is represent
ed by sandstone In Sams Valley
and the Quaternary is the loose
alluvium lying at the foot of all
hills now.
As stated above veins are clas
sified according to mineral con
tent. Hypothermal veins were
deposited at great depth and
high temperature, supposedly be
tween 300 and 500 degrees cen
tigrade. Principal ores are cas
siterite (tin), wolframite (tung
sten) and molybdenite. I do not
know of tin having been found
here although both tungsten and
molybdenite are known. Com
mercial ores of these veins are
usually gold, copper and lead,
Mesothermal veins were form
ed at medium depth and at a
temperature between 200 and
300 degrees centigrade. Chief
ores are gold, pyrite, chalcopy
rite, arsenopyrite, galena, sphale
rite, etc. Commercial values are
usually gold, copper, lead and
zinc. ,
I do not know of sphalerite
having been found in this area
but the other metals are fairly
common. Sphalerite in other
parts of the world is called black
jack or zinc sulphide.
Gold Main Metal
Epithermal veins were deDOsit-
ed at shallow depths and low
temperature. Typical ores are
gold, marcasite (iron), cinnabar
ana stionite. Vein material is
quartz, opal, calcite or barite,
Commercial values are gold, sil
ver and mercury.
Gold is a orinclDal metal of all
three types of veins but it does
not follow that all veins will be
rich in gold. Fortunately most
veins of southern Oregon do
carry gold, however, I know of
an antimony vein tstibnitei thai
shows only a trace of gold; also
a copper vein (chalcopyrite) that
assayed only a trace of gold. 1
